Author Unlocking Nokia 3120b?

I've bought a used Nokia 3120b (used on AT&T / Cingular) and I want to change
the phone to my own provider (T-Mobile). I've Google around and found that
unlocking a phone (one locked to a provider) is a several-stage process.

1. Enter *#06#
2. Read the s/n displayed
3. Enter the s/n, phone model, and provider code into an unlock generator
program (or web page)
4. Read the resulting 7 strings of digits

This is where I get a bit lost. I've been unable to find instructions beyond
this step. You only get 5 tries to unlock the phone (and there's 7 unlock
codes???), and I want to get this right, so I ask:

- Does getting the s/n (entering *#06#) count as one of the 5 unlock tries?
- Once I've got the unlock codes, what do I do next to unlock the phone?
- The phone is an AT&T/Cingular phone. Do I use the provider code for AT&T
or the one for Cingular (when generating the unlock codes)? How can I find
out (from the phone) which service code it has programmed in?

Basically I need a step-by-step instruction for this.

Thanks,

Should have said:

How can I find out (from the phone) which *provider* code it has programmed
in?

I presume that this GSM phone (GSM 900/1800/1900) phone *can* be used on
T-Mobile service. Am I right?

Isn't GSM in USA 850/1900? 1900 will pick up a lot, but I have read that a
most new stuff is 850? (Please correct me if wrong!)

T-Mobile does not have any GSM850 licenses, so a 900/1800/1900 phone will
work just fine on T-Mobile's 1900 MHz network.

cingular was mainly GSM 850 where they were the "A" side cellular
provider in many areas before they bought out AT&T Wireless (except in
California and the Carolinas where they were 1900 only.) AT&T
Wireless ran 1900 in all their markets, but only 850 in markets where
they were one of the "cellular" providers (usually the A side.) So
1900 should work in pretty much all cingular markets. You will get
better results though if you get a handset that does 850 as well as
1900. If you are using T-Mobile 1900 will work fine in T-Mobile areas
since that's the only frequency T-Mobile uses. T-Mobile does have
some 850 roaming agreements so that if you travel a lot there's a good
likelihood that having 850 available to you will help give you better
coverage.

Thank you, all, for your contributions. I'll use your comments when searching
for an appropriate phone.

Anyone know how to unlock a provider-locked Nokia?

I used an online Nokia 'Unlock' calculator. In seconds (and for free), I
had the unlock code that worked with my phone. I can't remember the site at
the moment.

There are some services out there that will, for a modest price, do the job
right guaranteed. I have used these guys and was happy with the result:

http://www.cellularpager.com/unlock.html

This is a brick and mortar establishment in California with a phone they
answer, not some no name no phone no where web site. I sent my phone to
them priority mail, they unlocked it the same day they got it and sent it
right back.

Beats heck out of wasting your time trying to do it yourself at some risk
of screwing things up. I think I paid around $27 with shipping costs
figured in.

Google it. There are on line sites that will do it and there are
downloadable aps that can do it for you (generate unlock codes.)

I have (read sig). Apps are for PC. I have a Mac. Web sites I've found that
are DIY are incomplete re. instructions. Hence my questions.

I just unlocked my 3120b, using the very instructions I posted to this
thread.

Have you seen them?

Frankly, I got the instructions from http://forums.cingular.com

Take some initiative and *look!* The information is readily available
but you do have to make some effort. Spending no more than 15 seconds
at google will give you lots of good links. Perhaps other people will
spoon feed you the information.

You quite missed his not wanting to do any of the work himself. It's
likely this won't help him either.

I freaking spoon-fed the instructions, in this very thread, and he still
came back and acted dumb.

Or maybe it wasn't an act...
