| The guy who handles the phone at work (small office) is a luddite and is
leaving. I want to upgrade his work station with a computer with Act contact
manager to help get more calls made with less information being misplaced to
cut down on errors. The programs allows a modem to dial the number then the
user picks up the handset to speak.
Using a plantronics headset will make that a bit better but one still has to
physically lift the handset. Seems that a better solution should have been
figured out by now as this is how it was done in 1990 when I set up the same
sort of thing for a client.
It seems to me that with a basic computer headset with mic the telephone
itself should be redundant. The modem can dial, the computer can handle
sounds (voice). The Plantronics headset is a couple of hundred dollars so if
a more convenient set up is possible for the same or less it would be better
to use it.
Any ideas? Just can't think of anything else to Google.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to know if there is
something out there that would also pickup the handset so your system
can get a dial tone, and dial out, am I correct?
If that is your question, I have a client who is using something
interesting.
A product by GN Netcom allows you to answer from your wireless headset
by pressing a button on your wireless adapter, I think it offers the
same when dialing out. I don't own it, but was impressed, and the
client loves it.
They have several products to choose from.
Here is the Handset lifter:

Hope that helps.
