Author RIM Blackberry 7290 failure repair for "locked at rotating hour-glass"

My Blackberry 7290 failed with just a rotating hour-glass icon for the
display. There was no indication that there was a problem before the
lock-up.

The unit is always powered on and charged daily for 7 hours. It had been on
battery power and operational for 4 hours after disconnection from the
charger before the failure occurred. It seemed to be receiving a download
from a T-Mobile connection at the time of failure. I was not using it for
any function (I had just removed it from the holster) so I thought it odd
that the download was in progress. Since the only display was the rotating
hour glass, I could not access any other function. I returned the unit to
the holster and waited an hour before checking again. It was still locked
up.

I removed the battery to reset the unit and when the battery was
reconnected, the unit immediately powered ON and locked up with the rotating
hour glass. I removed the battery and left the unit without power for 24
hours. Reconnecting the battery produced the same lock up.

I then contacted T-Mobile who gave me the RIM support number. Following the
automated response (computer) series of questioning, I was able to get on
their call back list and received a call-back after 40 minutes. However,
since I did not speak the word "Blackberry" in the description of "the
reason I was calling" during the automated response questioning, I was
connected to the wrong group. Fortunately, the support person was able to
transfer my call to the Blackberry group.

We spent a few hours on a landline phone connection troubleshooting the
Blackberry and there was a transfer to a third support person involved
before I had a functional Blackberry again. The final fix was to completely
erase the Blackberry and reload with the latest software, both handheld
(Blackberry 7290) and Desktop Manager (PC).

Since I was unable to "Google" any past information that covered this type
of Blackberry failure, I am posting my notes below, gained from the
transaction with the RIM support.
