My wife has tracfone that she just bought new and activated it. It's the
Motorola V170. Can we transfer the phone to Net10 later? She's using a
different tracfone service at present.

JoshIII responds:
Nope, you can't use a TracFone for Net10.
You can't use a Net10 phone as a TracFone.

The Net10 program (in the phone itself) deduct 10 cents a min.

The TracFone program (in the phone) deduct units:
1 unit = 1 minute
When roaming on a CDMA TracFone: 2 units = 1 minute

How does your wife like the V170?

The V170 has lots of bells and whistles that are disabled as a TracFone. :(
i.e., Mobile Web, Chat, IM, etc.

You'd have to find a way to get it unlocked first. Then, Net10 doesn't
sell just the SIM, so you'd have to get a new phone anyway.

If you can live with T-Mobile's coverage, it's a better deal than
Tracfone GSM service or Net10 (part of Tracfone) GSM service.

It's 10 cents per minute, with no $30 minimum (as with Net10), and less
per minute than Tracfone. But with poorer coverage.

Ok thanks

So with T Mobile To Go Id have no coverage at all if
outside their system area?

If yes..... is that generally true of all prepaid plans
no matter who markets them?

<<is that generally true of all prepaid plans no matter who markets
them?>>

No, Tracfone has coverage over most of the country, using multiple
carriers.

Be aware that Tracfone has been losing coverage in major markets.

VERIFY they exist where you will USE the phone BEFORE commiting any
money.

I have talked to several major retailers who are getting significant
Tracfone returns because of this problem.

Please post some specific examples so that I can check them out

Like I said, you have to verify it at the locations that interest you.

DO NOT TRUST the coverage maps that Tracfone shows on their web
site...they are worthless.

Verify BEFORE you spend any serious money...like any smart consumer.

You earlier said that you have "talked to several major retailers who
are getting significant Tracfone returns because of this problem". If
you don't give some specific, verifiable examples, I will assume that
you are a liar.

Well John "a Tracfone employee" Cowart, you can assume all you want.

I am not going to do your homework for you.

I giving a consumer the advice that they should carefully examine what
Tracfone says they offer before they spend their money considering what
has been occurring recently. As a Tracfone employee, I can understand
why that might upset you.

Of course if you now come back and deny that you are a Tracfone
employee, I will assume that you are a liar....and I will not be the
only one.
