I took my CallPlus TDMA prepaid phone on the road for the first time
last week, and driving through the wide-open spaces I got nice
strong signals a good part of the way, but there was no AT&T or
Cingular on the display, and no "D". Just the signal and battery
bars.

Was I on AMPS in these areas? If so, then it appears to be pretty
much everywhere, but there was virtually no TDMA service outside
major cities, even in some fairly good sized towns.

Since TDMA will eventually go away, what network would you pick to
have service on the open road? Would a CDMA phone also switch to
AMPS when necessary? Or is AMPS also going to die? Then what would
you do?
