Get an unlocked GSM phone and buy prepaid SIM from either Rogers or
Fido. (Approximately C$25 for the SIM card and then refills usually in
amounts $10 to $50. The larger denominations are a better deal.)
Some Fido cards have per minute rate of 15 cents/minute with shorter
expiry time.

While that may be a good idea, I wonder if Sprint PCS DOES work in
Canada. There are two major CDMA carriers up there, and Verizon
Wireless works on them in Canada. (I've used them frequently.)

Just checked - Sprint PCS does roam in Canada, with the existing CDMA
networks and existing phone, for 65c/minute. Check their website for
more info. The OP might have to have International Roaming set up -
the number they give is 1-888-226-7212.
Check the website for coverage area, but it seems to be fairly
extensive.

You have a point there, but I'm not sure what it is. Unless your home
carrier is *giving away* roaming and long distance getting local
prepaid is almost always cheaper in the long run.

But he's not there for the long run - he's there for a week.
For me, it was much less expensive to switch to VZW's North America's
Choice while I was there.

Unless you're only gonna make a couple of calls. It'd be kind of
silly to buy a phone and a prepaid SIM if you only intend on making
2-3 calls. (I can't remember what the OP said about how much he
wanted to use the phone, though.) 2-3 minutes of phone time roaming
on Sprint PCS would be under $2, and I doubt he could get a phone and
a SIM card for that much ;) And it appears as if Sprint PCS includes
LD for that 65c/minute rate.
Now, if he's planning to talk a lot in that week, it becomes a whole
other story.

Or you need to be reachable at your US phone number.
