Paris-based Alcatel announced on Friday that it will acquire Nortel
Networks's radio access business for $320 million, pending necessary
approvals.
As a result of the deal, Nortel's customers could double Alcatel's
radio access market share to approximately 15%, according to Standard &
Poor's Equity Research analyst Clara Van de Elst.
The analyst also said trouble may loom for the pending merger of
Alcatel and Lucent Technologies (nyse: LU - news - people ), originally
announced in March.
"We believe that following disappointing second-quarter results at
Lucent, there is increased likelihood that Alcatel shareholders next
week will fail to approve the planned merger with Lucent," she said.

A piece of Nortel now, pick up the rest later. Nortel of course was at
one time Northern Telecom, and before that Northern Electric, the
Canadian spinoff of Western Electric.
Pretty soon, the major telephone switch builders of the US & Canada
will become divisions of a European, Japanese, Chinese or Korean
company.
Alcatel (French) purchases Lucent (American) now. Nokia (Finish)
purchases Siemens (German) now.
Who will be the next victim? How long will Motorola stay independent?
Its a "dog eat dog" world now. Its a matter of time.

Carmela is headed for rue La Boetie !!
September 7, 2006, 4:45 PM CDT
PARIS -- Alcatel SA and Lucent Technologies Inc. overcame shareholder
misgivings to win firm backing Thursday for their 8.4 billion euros
($10.7 billion) tie-up to create a major global telecommunications
equipment maker.
The near-simultaneous votes in Paris and Wilmington, Delaware, gave the
go-ahead for Alcatel's all-stock acquisition of New Jersey-based
Lucent, scheduled for completion by the end of the year......
Russo and Alcatel boss Serge Tchuruk -- already named non-executive
chairman of the combined company -- both faced down hecklers as they
took the agreement to a vote.
"Mark my words, within one year you will want to leave," shareholder
activist Evelyn Davis admonished Russo. "The French are going to run
the show."
