Author GSM unlocking - iwireless service

We set up our 3 children on iwireless (formerly iowa wireless), with prepay
for unlimited monthly minutes. We purchased the phones at full price and
there was no contract. New towers were planned for our area, but now that
they are finished the coverage is not going to be good enough. We've now
gone back to our original non-GSM carrier for all 3. I have 3 GSM cell
phones that I would like to sell. How do I know if they are locked to the
carrier? We called iwireless and they said yes they are locked, but they
didn't lock them, the manufacturer does. A second call and they said we are
a small company and don't have the technology to unlock them. Since we paid
full price for these phones, I'm ticked off. What other GSM carriers are
there in the heart of Iowa that I could go to and test their SIM card? If
they're locked, I don't want to send the phones out, and I'm leery about
giving out the IMEI number for remote unlock. I've tried a code calculator
for a nokia 6170, but the model doesn't show up. The other two phones are
motorola and LG. Are we getting the truth from iwireless? Any suggestions?

Unlocking is not a technology issue. The code to unlock them was
created at the time they were locked, and the same software that use
to lock them can calculate the unlock code. You are getting a less
than truthful answer. I would add that even if you paid the 'full
price', it is unlikely that you paid the full price for the phone
itself. Almost no wireless company sells unlocked phones, the price
would definitely make your hair stand on end. Once upon a time the
predecessor to T-Mobile/VoiceStream in the New York Metro area offered
unlocked phones, but only from their own outlets (not agents, or
retailers). The price definitely caused you to take notice. A basic
Motorola Triband cost $500 unlocked...

Agents and retailers just don't want to have that kind of money tied
up in inventory.

Try downloading the Unlock Codes Calculator from unlock.nokiafree.org.
It does have the 6170 Model and Iowa Wireless Services choices.

You may want to read the forum postings in www.unlocknokia.us or
www.cellphonehacks.com before keying in your code and for unlocking
your other phones.

Happy unlocking.
