Any unlocked 900mHz GSM phone will do. A 900/1800 will do better.

A tri 900/1800/1900 or quad band 850/900/1800/1900 will be useable in the
U.S. too, but it adds unecessary complication and price.

Note that in MOST places that have both 900 and 1800 service, the cheaper
service providers are on 1800. Israel is an exception where the cheaper
one Orange, is on 900 (and has some 1800 service) while Cell-Com is
1800 only (with a 800 mHz TDMA network).

If you know people in one of the countries you are going to visit,
you may ask them to look for a cheap phone for you. Nokia 5100's sell
for $15-$25 here and a new battery can be had cheaply before you leave.
They are extremely easy to unlock and are a good basic 900 mHz phone.

Your friends may even have one in a drawer and would be glad to give
it to you.

There is ONE eastern European country with only a GSM 1800 network, but
I don't remember which.

If you are looking for a nice modern phone, look at the Motorola c380.
Tri band 900/1800/1900 and I've seen them unlocked for about $110 on the
internet. Motorola phones are hard to unlock, so make sure if you buy one
it is unlocked. There are "timeport" phones sold on eBay that are
GSM 1900 only although the model is tri-band. They were a special run
for a west coast sp. At least one person here has complained about being
sold one.

Nokia phones are more expensive, but they are easier to unlock.
