Hi,

I have spent 10's of hours trying to get a laptop connected to the
internet via my GX30i using GPRS.

The settings are correct (as per multiple web pages) and I tried all
the workarounds to subsidary settings to get it working, with no
success.
I have GPRS signal and can send/receive MMS messages and WAP browse
over GPRS.

The error messages are:-

- Looking at modem log, I get a CONNECT message then 4 seconds later, I
get a NO CARRIER. Vodafone assure me that internet gprs is enabled.
- At a higher level I get the
"Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated during
dial-up"

What I really want to know is if anyone has actually connected a device
to the internet via GX30i.

Have you done any interactive configuration or testing using a
terminal emulator like Hyperterminal?

Have you set up the APN using the "AT+CGDCONT" command?

What "number" are you dialling? Does it match the Context
Identifier from the "AT+CGDCONT" command?

I can't help with that question specifically.

How old is the SIM? I have a couple of SIMs over 5 years old
that I can't get GPRS working with (symptoms very similar to
yours).

The SIM maybe than 5 years.
Did it work when you got a newer SIM ?

Yes - unfortunately I didnt keep a log of it.

I tried specifically adding the command to the initialisation string.
However, the log file showed that the modem creates a similar string
when using *99# type string.

That was a suggestion from my telco (Telstra, Australia) as to
why I couldn't get GPRS going on 2 old SIMs. Newer SIMs work
fine, but I haven't bothered upgrading those old ones.

Just to be sure, I use *99***1# (using Context Identifier 1
specifically), to match the AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","<apn>" that I
configured. AT+CGDCONT needs to be executed only once, but
putting it the initialization string is fine too.

I think I've got the above syntax right, but I'm largely going
from memory as I'm "on the road" (and using GPRS and a Linux
laptop) at the moment.
