I live in the USA and am interested in acquiring an unlocked GSM phone
primarily for use, sending and receiving voice calls, in Europe and the UK.
The ability to use the phone in the middle and far east would nice but is
not a hard requirement. The ability to leave voice messages would also be
nice but is not a hard requirement at this point.

Thank you for any helpful suggestions as to how I might accomplish this.

If all you are interested in is using it outside of the US, then look
for an eurasian triband. That's a phone with 900/1800/1900. The
american triband has 850 instead of 900. In europe/Asia/Africa the
bands used there 900/1800. We use 850/1900 in the US. You can even look
for the dual-band with 900/1800. Now, if you also plan on using the
phone isn the US, with tmobile (primarily a 1900 ONLY carrier) any of
the tribands will do, but with cingular you need a quadband, because
they use both 850/1900.

Whatever phone you get, make sure it's unlocked so that it will accept
any provider's sim card. The best place to look is ebay...see link.
For about $100 you can get a good quadband on ebay.

You should be carefull in choosing since not all phones are capable of
receive network in both Europe Asia and US. For this .. you'll need a
triband phone... besides this.. it's just a matter of taste. I personaly
like the Nokia 6600.. but if you're more into the business type... then a
Sony Ericsson p910i or Nokia 9500 are also very good choices.

I suggest you look at Motorola quad band phones, which would be
available fairly cheaply in USA. Make sure unlocked, in case you wish
to use a local sim card whilst travelling.

Once you buy a phone, I can recommend you a very good SIM card for
Europe:

It has great rates for Europe, in most countries incoming calls are
free and outgoing calls are only $.45-$.60 per minute no matter where
you call. Better yet, this card expires only after one year of
inactivity, while most card expire within 3-6 months.

I am going to buy it myself for use in Europe. I've done lots of
research, and I think this one has the best rates for Europe.
