I have an application where I want to send an SMS, probably
once a day, from a remote system. I want to be able to connect
a cheap old handset with a PAYG SIM to a PC and install the
lot in a rural location -- where there is GSM coverage.

The handset and the computer that drives it would run off a
lead-acid battery and a solar panel, probably for weeks at
a go, unattended.

I'm looking for pointers to a cheap old handset model that can
do GSM1900 and that has an accessible RS232 protocol for sending
SMS messages under computer control.

I've had a quick look at the gnokii software that I could
use with a Nokia 5190 or 6190. Are there newer handset models
that are readily available used, for cheap, that support a more
straight-forward protocol, like the "AT" commands? What should
I be looking for?

6190 was about the last generation of Nokia phones that ddi not have an
integrated AT modem emulator in it. Newer ones that support GPRS and
have serial support would have an AT command set that make writing
software much simpler. 6190 and before required very proprietary software.

Thanks for the idea. I think the computer that controls the phone
will be a Gumstix http://www.gumstix.org/ single board computer
running Linux or BSD Unix, not a Windows computer.
