Moto says the battery in a HS820 is not replaceable, and toss it. What says
the group?

Motorola 270C, bluetooth module and HS820.

Just for fun, suggestions for replacement? any brand, any model? also use
Nokia 6230 & hs-11w.

If you're just going to toss it, might as well try and open it to see
what's inside. If you get lucky you might be able to replace the battery.
Even if you don't, you might post some pictures and others might be able
to decipher how to do it for future use.

I've been waiting for the past year for either my 810 or 820 to kick the
bucket so I could do just that!! So far they're both working perfectly
though!

I definately will open it and attempt a replacement. I forget if it is 2 or
3 years old, but I've been using the HS820 for a long time. I'm
disappointed that Motorola has no battery swap option. I'm temped to get a
hs805, the one with the replacable battery. But some sort of noise
cancelling headset is always worth the extra price. The Moto 270c is 6
years old, and I have two spares just in case. Dated, large and analog.

HS820 disection results in a few days. There's only one screw and it's
probably a real small allen.

My HS810 finally died completely today and I popped it apart and took a
picture with my Panasonic FZ20...
This is a cropped and resized version but it has the full EXIF data.

you sure did pop it apart. in the pic at 3 o'clock, there is a small hex
head screw. the body does appear to be glued. i wonder if the screw was
out, would the glue release without so much damage? did you get to the
battery?

Yes, that screw turns out to be a T6 and after I removed it the circuit
board came out. By the way, the round silver thing with the gold border that
is just left of center is apparently part of the contact arrangement for the
button that you push to activate the voice dialing, etc. Also just to the
right of that is the small status LED.

Here are the pics of the battery. All taken with my FZ20 in AV mode set at
f8 and using the 2 second self-timer and my home-made 'macro container'
consisting of a disposable food container with a hole cut in it. Here's a
picture of the 'Fizzie' mounted on the container. I also use a fold down
shelf that I put on the outside of the door several years ago (for a cat
that I had at the time who liked to side up there and look out the storm
door).
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bdolson/fz20/fizzie.jpg

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bdolson/fz20/battery1.jpg This is what you see
by just lifting the circuit board out. The battery of course is the large
rectangular object.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bdolson/fz20/battery2.jpg And if you pull the
battery out (it's stuck in place a bit by some sort of soft glue, but it
releases fairly easily) this is what you see. You can see the short ribbon
cable connecting the battery (well technically it's a CELL, since a battery
is made up of more than one CELL) to the mainboard.

So assuming that one could get the headset apart without destroying it, and
that one could find a battery of the same type, it would be possible to
replace it I guess..:-)

i would think the battery would cost more then buying a new one anyway.

Yes, I imagine it might.. Which is why I'm keeping the (destroyed) 810 in
case I can at some future time use the battery in my 820... Probably not,
but it's a thought..:-)

I have read other posts where people complained about the Blue LED
distracting them at night while driving. Since I had not done much of
that at the time, I thought their posts were overblown. But now having
driven in very dark areas I too have come to the conclusion that the
LED is very bright, and is very distracting. I still think that
setting the headset LED side down on the seat is a way to minimize the
distraction, but when you put it on your ear to have a conservation
the light is very annoying. And the whole point of the device, in my
opinion is to wear it, so that answering calls is easy.
I was considering putting electrical tape over the light, and still
might try this.
The talk about opening up the headset to replace the battery made me
think that it might also be possible to disconnect the LED. It does
appear from the photos, that it is impossible to open it with out
destroying it. Is it not possible to remove the screw and then
separate the two halves?
What other fixes has anyone developed to keep from the LED distracting
them while driving at night?

I had a small piece of black electrical tape on my 820 for a while, but I
removed it eventually as with it on I couldn't tell when the headset was on.

There is something covering that screw, but I'm not sure right now what it
was...

I don't think I'd want to completely remove that LED either.

The new H700 has the ability to turn off that status LED if wanted..
http://promo.motorola.com/ProductPreviews/h700.html

But I don't know if/when it'll become available here in the states.

Yes. A drop of my wife's dark red nailpolish. It reduces the intensity
sufficiently so that it doesn't distract, but it is still visible when
looked at directly. Simple, tidy and effective.

The folding boom microphone was my favorite feature of the 810. And if I had
it turned off, I either left it in the door pocket in the car, or dropped it
into my shirt pocket. I really can't see any benefit to having it on my ear
while it's turned off.

So today I put another piece of tape on my 820, to 'almost' cover the LED...

Here it is before I put the tape on.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bdolson/fz20/tapeoff.jpg

And here I put the small piece of electrical tape to cover all but a tiny
sliver of the LED.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bdolson/fz20/tapeon.jpg

Man, the slightest specks of dust show up in macros, don't they??? :-)
