Pay people? "Free" in cell phone terms mean you get the hardware for free
only when you are also obliged to pay monthly calling plan fees for a year
or more. The term: (when purchased with service plan) tells it all.

I just got a moto V330 for free from TMI Wireless with a $50 customer
loyality rebate on top of that. So it's costing me -$50. They also
threw in a car charger for free. S&H also free..............

Was that the WHOLE deal? Nothing there about committing to a calling plan
with no cancellation for a year or more? And you really believe it's
Free? Sheesh! Wanna buy a free bridge?
By that definition, a house bought on a 100% mortgage is free. Let's all
have free houses!

Occasionally there are good deals though. My parents had a couple of old
analog cell phones activated on a grandfathered non-expiring prepaid plan.
It literally had no reoccuring costs at all until the minutes were used up.
All this time we were under the impression that no more minutes could be
purchased as the plan was discontinued years ago, so my parents just kept
the phones in their cars for emergencies and that urgent call home when a
car breaks down, etc.
Well, the phones recently appear to have bit the dust somehow. In speaking
with the carrier I discovered that their new prepaid program was offering a
promotion - buy an airtime card good for 30 days of service and get a free
Nokia 2285. No service provider subsidy lock. No contract. No obligation.
Period. Then I discovered that this carrier actually was allowing the new
airtime cards to be added to the balance of the old non-expiring phones. You
wouldn't get as many minutes, but you would get the cash value of the card
added at the old non-expiring rates and the minutes still don't expire on
those accounts despite what it says on the card.
So, I bought three cards, got three free phones, no contracts... Then did an
ESN change on each of them to replace my parents two analog phones, added
the airtime card to the phones after the ESN change was done, and got the
airtime in on the old non-expiring account. As a bonus when we switched from
analog to CDMA, the carrier doubled our remaining balance because they were
trying to get rid of the analog phones. We ended up with more minutes
remaining on the account than what we had a few years ago when we first
bought the old phones!
Oh, and that third phone--I put it on my monthly post-paid account. Turns
out they wanted me to sign a 2-year contract on the exact same service plan
to get the exact same phone for free on a post-paid account. But, because I
bought the extra prepaid airtime card and gave it to my parents, I got the
phone for free with no contract obligation.
I don't think they really liked this very much, but hey--they're the ones
that advertised this promotion, not me!
