America's largest wireless network? I doubt it.
One of the largest, to be sure. But let's look at company history:
(a) Alltel started as a company that only serviced landlines in rural and a
few smaller metro areas. Their wireless coverage initially continued that trend.
(b) Through mergers and acquisitions, they got bigger. They also swapped some
markets with Verizon. They also got a couple markets as a result of the
merger that created Verizon; for example, my hometown, which already had
AirTouch Cellular flipping to Verizon Wireless. Alltel got Cleveland's old
GTE Mobilnet network.
(c) The biggest deal was their recent purchase of Western Wireless, owner of
the CellularONE brand. They were already reasonably large by then, but that
deal added a decent amount of real estate.
(d) Yet even now, although they *are* now a major player, they don't service
any of the three biggest markets. Nothing in NYC, nothing in Los Angeles,
nothing in Chicago. Not only do they not serve Los Angeles, they have no
coverage in California at all. The closest location to my house where I can
use Alltel's network is the Grand Canyon, a few hundred miles away from here.
I have a problem believing that a cell carrier not serving *any* part of
California qualifies as the largest in the country.
I mean, I'm pretty sure Alltel's a decent carrier; I was a customer of theirs
for a while and they treated me well. :) They're just not "the largest in the
country."

I believe "the largest" claim is based on square miles of service area
provided, not based on number of customers served. With t he purchase
of Western Wireless, Alltel gained a lot of real estate and if cows
ever start using cell phones, Alltel's customer count could end up
being the largest. In the mean time, they are getting a good deal of
revenue from roamers becauses they are the only carrier in some of the
more desolate areas of our western states.

They are almost "joined at the hip" with Verizon; I've had no trouble
with my Alltel phone, no charge for roaming on the older NF plan which
allowed paid-for roaming, in LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento,
Fresno. I DID have trouble in South Lake Tahoe.

So to make the claim whats-his-name made is, strictly speaking, inaccurate.
Since the person making the claim sells for Alltel, I would recommend that he
be a little more careful about such claims in the future.

I read on the Alltel web site that they purchase their roaming
services from Sprint/Nextel.

Some, probably. But Alltel's biggest roaming partnership is with Verizon
Wireless, unless the big roaming agreements they signed a few years ago
expired and weren't renewed.
But the claim is still inaccurate. :)

Did OnStar figure out how to get the signalling tones the cars use through
the low res crappy CDMA/GSM audio codecs good enough for the decoders to
reliably open the doors in the country, yet?
I heard the tones got too much intermod distortion from the poorly encoded
audio. The tones are nearly as high frequency as the sampling rates!

They are called ROAMING AGREEMENTS! Alltel may not have towers in NYC, but
they have roaming agreements with those who do.... Cripes. If you don't
like them, quit....

WTF are you talking about?
(a) I don't have a problem with roaming agreements.
(b) I don't use Alltel. Look at my signature; I live in California. What part
of "Alltel doesn't offer service in California" did you fail to understand?
(b2) Since I don't use Alltel, I can't leave Alltel.
(c) I was just commenting, not complaining. I have no problem with Alltel.
Alltel's marketing has absolutely no effect on which wireless carrier I
choose. Jeez. It's as if I said "Alltel sucks" and now everyone is bashing me :)
(d) Switch to decaf! :)

Hey Larry. Patrick went off on me, not the other way around. As I mentioned,
I have no problem with Alltel. I even liked them back when I was using them.
Not that you need a valid reason to attack me; you'll do it anyhow. You lost
all credibility with me a while back when you insisted I was affiliated with
Mossad and launched into a cute little anti-Semitic rant.
> They all suck. But, I find Alltel seems to suck less than VZW did and they

I don't own any stock; I don't trust the stock market. Is there any
particular reason you're so hellbent on defending Alltel?
All I did was say that the claim is inaccurate. That's all I've ever said,
and apparently you and Patrick are alarmed by this. And a couple other people
too, who want to argue with me that Carrier X's native network includes
roaming areas.
Oh yeah, Larry, and: http://stevesobol.com/goodbye_vzw/
Still want to insist that I'm a Verizon shill? Or do you just want to slam me
because I'm supposedly a member of the Israeli secret police?
I give credit where it's due, and offer negative feedback when it's warranted.

Israeli != Jewish. I thank you for understanding that.
But Larry, you've made slurs against Jews too. And you made a big mistake in
assuming I blindly agree with everything Israel does simply because I'm
Jewish. Should I point people to another part of the rant in question, with
proof that you have a problem with Jews, or shall I stop now?
I mean, who exactly do you think you are? Are you some guy I've known for
years, that you are safe in assuming exactly what I'm thinking? You don't
even know me.
OK. You have a boner for Verizon Wireless. That's your choice. You think VZW
sucks for various reasons. You are certainly welcome to your opinion. But you
have a habit of (sometimes) slamming people who argue with you, in very
unpleasant ways... hardly a way to win an argument. You've done it to me more
than once, and that has led to my decision to ignore most of what you say,
even if I agree with some of it. (And, by the way, I do occasionally agree
with you.)
If you want to debate me, please, by all means, go ahead! Slamming my
religion, or slamming me because you believe I hold certain political
beliefs, isn't necessary. (Especially when you have no way of knowing for
sure that I hold those beliefs.)
One more thing. I've gotten huffy with you, and your reply has been to whine
that I'm insulting you. If this is such a problem, perhaps you should look at
some of the things you've said to me, and stop being a hypocrite.
I've fought with plenty of trolls in the almost 17 years I've been on Usenet.
Unlike most of their posts, I actually find some of your posts informative
and useful. It's too bad so many of them contain so much vitriol and so
little content.

Nope. I think that's what most people think, but I was serious. There are
Christian and Muslim contingents there, although the majority of Israelis are

You're absolutely correct... Most people equate Israel with Judaism and,

Don't know specifically what they use, but why wouldn't they just use a
data connection rather than trying to force tones over a CDMA voice
connection?

Yes. Verizon and Alltel have sweet roaming agreements. I've commented on
the roaming issue earlier in the thread.
I am not claiming Alltel phones won't work in California... not at all. Just
that they do not have a network here. Alltel does not have a native network
anywhere in Cali.

| At one time it was mentioned in this thread that Alltel was the provider for
OnStar. I called alltel tech support (611) and they said my onstar cell
phone could be setup with Alltell, my current cell phone provider, but I
would have to go to the local Alltel sales store to get it done.
Unfortunately the Alltel tech support and the local alltel shop(s) in
Wyoming are not communicating. The local shop(s) say that Alltel is NOT the
provider for Onstar nor is there anything they can do to get the onstar/gm
cell phone set up and working on an alltel account (inspite of what national
tech support said). They say I can't use the built in GM Cell phone, and I
need to buy a new cell phone to add it to my existing cell phone account
with presently is 4 cell phones. It seems all the people want to do in thier
local shops is sell "plans". The existing GM cell phone is working just fine
through onstar on the national account through GM on onstar's system but
after my first 30 minutes are used up, they want a credit card to charge
call to, which sounds quite expensive. Since it is a vehicle I use in my
business I want billed through my business account.
Has anyone actually go thier Onstar cell phone working through a normal
account with Alltel and is using it now? and if so, what did you do to get
it set up?
It seems all the local outlets for Alltel in Wyoming don't know and/or care
about much more than selling a "plan" with a new phone.
If some one is actually using thier Onstar through a "regular" alltel plan,
I'd really like to hear from them and how they accomplished the feat.

Onstar uses Verizon Wireless in SC, and I'm sure most of the rest of the
country. It's also proprietary, I'm sure, to Onstar's system. Does your
Onstar have a display and dialing pad? How would you make calls with the
Onstar button without an operator??
I agree with your Alltel store. They'll give you a free phone you don't
have to leave in the car. Onstar is on the old AMPS analog system that may
go dark in 2008. As it's not compatible with GPS/CDMA, I'm amazed they'd
even discuss it with you.

Ummmm.
Maybe the same way my phones' voicemail buttons work? You know, the ones that
dial *86 on Verizon or 123 on T-Mobile? I'm sure that's all the buttons do.

This is a lie, it's been proven to you that it's a lie, yet you're sticking
to it. OnStar is no longer all analog, although some older OnStar systems may
still use it.

Is Onstar now 200mw CDMA units? How do they send all the signalling over
such a shitty audio link? Is there a separate data channel?? The reason
for the AMPS was it handles the signalling tones without, of course, the
awful low-res audio codec distortions, AMPS being on FM.
Hell, crypto voice works great over AMPS....

I don't recall whether it's CDMA or GSM. The OnStar site might not have
said which technology they're using. They do say they're digital now, and
given a choice between believing someone who has an axe to grind and has
no association with the company or the service... or believing the company
that provides the service... I'll believe the company.
Google the cellular newsgroups - there is a link, but I don't recall which
group it was posted to.

Thanks. I'll file that information away for later use.
