Carriers report net subscriber adds. "Net" means the total number of
subscribers gained AFTER churn and all other subscriber gains and losses
are factored in. So they have actually signed up more custoemrs than
the 1.1 million, but are subtracting the lost customers to come to that
final "net" number.

Likewise, VZW's report of 1.9 million net subscriber adds factors in its
churn, as well. I'm not sure what the reported churn rates were, but it
would be very telling if Cingular had greater churn as well as a lower
net add.

It would be interesting if this happens, I admit. If Cingular can't
hold its place despite having significantly leapfrogged Verizon through
the AT&T acquisition, then it most definitely points to bad management
and poor CS and customer retention measures. It would also say a LOT
about Verizon, who would be regaining the #1 spot organically, without
having to buy out a carrier to get that flah-bang of new subscribers.

It appears they're only selling GSM in all markets now. Nowhere have I
seen Cingular still selling TDMA or GAIT. And AMPS isn't even worth
mentioning.

Wait, so Cingular is offering AMPS service in places where it does not
offer GSM? Are you CERTAIN the AMPS is being offered by Cingular and
not some carrier on the "opposing" A or B side?

looking at the Verizon voerage map, it seems like a good portion of
Georgia is native Verizon CDMA. Though there is a lot of swiss-cheese
holes in the coverage that gets filled out by "extended network"
partners, most of which are also CDMA.
