I like to keep a spare, fully-charged battery with me, for quick swap-out
in case I exhaust my V551 battery in an emergency. I had ordered a
V-series battery from a cheap eBay seller, and what came was the older,
black SNN5075 battery. It's a genuine Motorola product, and fits the phone
physically. However the phone will not power up unless I first connect it
to the charger for a moment - then it recognizes the battery and works
fine .. until I remove it. Replacing it again ... phone does not see it.
Obviously this makes it unsuitable for its intended purpose, unless I use
that one as the main battery instead.

A couple of other Motorola phones recognize this SNN5075 without prodding.
My V551 will also recognize a couple of older, fatter (SNN5705 size)
batteries from my old 280i without prodding.

What gives? Why would a Motorola phone reject a recent vintage Motorola
branded battery that fits?
