Those all seem to indicate that your 6340i did not have the ESN
registered in the system properly. The 6340i, when it cannot
authenticate TDMA, locks onto GSM. I had this with Cingular SIMs, AT&T
Wireless SIMs, and T-Mobile SIMs. Putting an unregistered SIM in the
6340i will have the phone lock onto TDMA.
Also, I highly doubt Cingular is selling much of anything, because no
company will want to buy a dying network without spectrum. Again, if
you reached a message something like "Welcome to the American Roaming
Network...", that is a standard message that a lot of operators use to
allow you to make credit card calls when you cannot roam onto their
system. With a properly configured ESN, you would be able to use the
system as long as roaming agreements existed.
I didn't think to bring a TDMA phone to try the service in Atlanta...I
should be going there in the next couple of months again.
