V551 EDGE software?
|
|
| dmartin@newarts.com 2006-02-16, 5:48 pm |
| I'm using an iBook & Bluetooth with an old V551 for data access. I
hesitate to update the phone's firmware because if it fails I'm screwed
majorly and/or am a weenie.
Using Toast.net I have a download throughput of 73K. (It varies between
70-80K).
I do not know if this is an EDGE area and do not know how to find out.
(Dunnellon, FL, SW of Ocala)....how can I find out if there's EDGE
coverage here?
My present confuguration has no special set-up strings, etc, & uses the
wap servers through old Media Works.
John Navas' Wikipedia FAQ* refers to some german software called
"Mobile High Speed for Mac OS"; on downloading it I see the want me to
buy a license to use it for EDGE.
Is this necessary? Might it help me obtain higher speeds?
Dave
* for which I thank him very much.

With that speed, you are getting EGPRS(EDGE) -- GPRS is limited to about 50
Kbps.

That should be fine.

It's actually a public project where anyone is welcome to contribute -- I just
started it.

No and no. The only things that might help are (1) better signal and (2) a
serial port speed of 230 Kbps or higher. Maximum EGPRS(EDGE) speed with the
V551 in ideal conditions is about 100 Kbps, but you may be in an area with a
restricted number of download slots.

You're very welcome.

Why are you interested in a firmware upgrade?

That's EDGE. The typical GPRS, non-EDGE, will be 30-35K, and I think it
can't go over 49K.
I get 70-90Kbps on Edge with Windows bluetooth on a v551. Does the iBook
have a "connection speed"? On Windows, this number can be anywhere from
19.2k to 430k for a bluetooth connection, and it is statically
configurable. It has nothing to do with your throughput, unless it is low
enough to be a limiting factor.

Perhaps it will help a problem that often when the phone is out of
Bluetooth range for a while it will not re-establish a Bluetooth/EDGE
connection until I reboot the phone.

That it does, in my case at least.
