I recently bought the phone with a voice/data plan.
I would like to find a robust FTP client for it.
So far the closest I've found is SoftX, but every time
I've tried it it timed out after sending only a part
of the file.

Is there a client that works reliably over the air?

try the HP 651x forums at www.mobilitytoday.com. you have a much larger pool of 65xx users there.
