All V551s have EDGE(EGPRS).

V557 EDGE is no faster than V551 EDGE.

V360, unlocked quad-band version. Faster EDGE than V551 or V557.

But you should first figure out why your V551 EDGE isn't working. Try
alt.cellular.cingular [cross-posted]. And see the Wikis below.

But the older v551 firmware doesn't display the little "E" when you have
EDGE reception. It's hard to tell, except for the speed. If it's over
40Kbps, it must be EDGE.


Only the icon has changed, not the speed.
Download a jpg image from some website on each phone, time the transfer.

The v557 could be (won't be) faster on upload, no download difference.

Since the speed is all that really matters, why worry about the symbol?
EGPRS(EDGE) connections can be slow just like GPRS connections.

Because lack of the "E", when comparing to the friend's newer v551, might
be what makes him think he doesn't have EGPRS capability.
