What's the best thing to do with no-longer-needed Cingular TDMA cell phones?
Can they still dial 911 even though unactivated? (If so, they'll be
emergency phones in our cars.) Is there a secondhand market for them?

don't they use TDMA in Mexico still ?? Also, have a monster argument with someone in plain view near water and yell loudly about the millions they owe you and kneecaps and then throw the thing in the drink ...it's sure to impress all your friends (and ma
ybe coupla enemies too!!) ...

Well, it won't work for TDMA phones because there going to be about as
useless as a 3 dollar bill soon, but if you had old GSM phones, I take
ours down to the school, neighbors w/kids, etc....There always
breaking there's and a new sim card and a good used phone from me and
there back in business.

How soon is Cingular abandoning TDMA service?

Last night I tried one of the phones and found that, since it's unactivated,
it connects to "American Roaming Network." I dialed a number and got a
message, "Welcome to American Roaming Network," followed by an invitation to
enter a credit card number and pay $2.99 per minute (or some such) for a
call. I declined.

I *presume* that such a phone could still dial 911 free. Right?

2008, same time they are allowed to turn off AMPS.

Yes, as long as there is a TDMA or AMPS network available.
