Cingular roaming on T-Mo in CA/NV may be going away shortly...

| Seems like Cingular is serious.
I live near John Wayne Airport(Newport Beach, CA) and folks in my
organization have started complaining about a decline in Cingular service.
Those who upgraded to the new 3G 64K SIM are not having the problem. Those
who didn't upgrade have poor service. Perhaps Cingular has stopped or is
stopping the roaming agreement with T-Mobile.

Guess I'll buster over to the local Cingular store this weekend and upgrade
both my V557's.

This is probably just a difference in homing. Only 64K SIMs and ENS
capable handsets allow Cingular to manually home subscribers OTA (over
the air) to either "blue" (old ATTWS, now Cingular) or "orange" (old
Cingular, now T-Mobile).

| I would recommend either Verizon or Sprint in Southern California. The GSM
carriers are not that good in this area.

All of the major carriers actually have good coverage in Northern
California, even MetroPCS. Cingular GSM coverage is arguably the best,
followed by Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint, although different carriers
are of course better/worse in different areas.

All depends on the specific area, since Souther California is so huge.
On a recent trip through LA to Palm Springs, my Cingular GSM coverage
was very good.

Hmmm. At least in San Francisco, Cingular has actually gotten MUCH
better after the ATT merger, to the point of people leaving Verizon for
Cingular.
Amazing, huh?

Yes, Cingular is far better now, than it was before the merger, but it
is still much worse than Verizon once you get outside the urban areas.
I.e. go off to the Berkeley Hills, the Marin Headlands, the Santa Cruz
mountains, or the San Mateo and Sonoma coasts, and Verizon will have
coverage where Cingular usually won't (I did find one place near Big
Basin where Cingular had coverage but Verizon didn't).
I'm sure some people have left Verizon for Cingular, but it's rare.

Don't smoke, and I'm afraid I'm just finished the last of this excellent
Pinot Noir. Maybe next time. ;)

All independent surveys show that Verizon has the best coverage in
Northern California.

Pinot Noir is for pussies! :-) Really, though, a nice Cab with pasta dish
loaded with a red sauce ... mmmmm.

The current St Jean Pinot Noir is incredibly rich and flavorful, with
Kenwood not far behind -- wonderful wines both, highly recommended.

These aren't surveys of Cingular GSM -- they mix in TDMA and thus aren't
valid for GSM -- and aren't actually surveys of "coverage" per se, no
matter what you might think or want to claim -- they are surveys of call
quality, and what they actually show is that differences in carrier call
quality are small. That said, Cingular GSM is arguably the best digital
network in Northern California.

Cingular has arguably the best coverage in Northern California,
including non-urban areas.

I will give it a try! I like the Kenwood Cab, so I will give the Pinot Noir a
try as well. Gotta head over and find the St. Jean ....
