So I did. I asked the nice guy in the store why my phone needed a new
one, but as Alice would say "The clue meter was reading zero". It took
this doof over half an hour to get the new SIM installed and my thirteen
numbers copied over from the old one. His grasp of how his product
actually worked seemed limited at best.

I didn't get a new SIM a few years ago when I upgraded from an old
Ericsson/PacBell 1900 MHz only one; I just had them stick the old SIM in
the new phone (an LG 4010 I'm perfectly happy with).

So the question is: will the new SIM do anything at all that I care
about that the old one could not, or is it just for their benefit?
Specifically, is there any chance that the phone actually could not
access the 850 band without that new SIM (because that's -- sort of --
what the clerk seemed to be implying).
