question regarding TREO 650 and Internet
|

| Hi all,
I'm about to upgrade from my very basic Nokia phone to the Treo 650.
One question. I've enjoyed being able to download basic "stuff" off the
internet (like sports scores, the weather) for just pennies per K of data
downloaded.
When I go to the Treo 650, I don't want (and can't really afford) the
$40/month for internet access.
Can I use the Treo 650 as I've been using my Nokia -- to just periodically
download data off the internet? Sort of an a la carte way rather than
paying a set fee per month.
Thanks for the help,
D
PS. For those that are shocked I don't want to use the new Palm Treo 650
for internet and email, I'm mostly just upgrading so I don't have to buy a
separate Palm and carry my cell phone around as well. :-)

Me neither, so I didn't sign up for it.

Works for me. I think it defaults to MEdia Net which is slower than
the other data access plans.

That's why I went the smartphone route ~three years ago. First with a
Kyocera 7135 on VZW, then the Treo 650 on Cingular.

| Cingular wouldn't let me get the Treo 650's $100 rebate unless I signed up
for the full-internet package. But they told me, off the record, to only
keep the $40/month internet package until I receive my rebate. And then to
cancel the internet access. They mentioned a $29.99 package for up to 5mb
of internet use per month. Do you have that? Or do you have no internet
package at all and just get billed by the usage, a la carte style?

When I got mine, the 650 was more expensive than now. The base price
through Cingular was $500, with two "with new contract" subsidized
discounts: $150 off for a two year contract, and $200 for a two year
contract with a data plan. Rather than futz with trying to change my
contract after a month, I simply opted to not get the data plan from
the start. The headache potential was not worth the $10 or so
difference it would have been.

A la carte. I do keep an eye on my data use charges, and to date, over
a year later, my actual usage has remained below even the cheapest data
package price. I won't even consider getting a data plan unless my
data usage exceeds the package price two months in a row.

| Thanks. I just hope they allow me to cancel my data plan altogether. I
doubt I'll be close to the kinda usage I need to average for this to be
worth it...

MEdia Net is actually the same speed as other data packages. The only
speed difference is that it doesn't have Data Acceleration, which boosts
apparent speed by sacrificing image quality.
