question on using Dell PDA with Cingular service
|
|
|
| Does anyone know a way to use a Dell Axim X51v PDA with Cingular service? I
see that you can get a PDA data plan but it's only for Cingular PDAs. I
could tether it to my cell phone but I would prefer something such as a card
that would pop into the PDA. It has CompactFlash Type II and Secure Digital
/ SDIO Now! / MMC card slots built in.
Thoughts?

It is probably easier to tether with a phone that supports bluetooth
reliably than a separate card, unless you were to have an account
dedicated to it. Otherwise, you will be having to keep on swapping
the SIM card between the 2.
I haven't heard of any CF or SD Cingular cards anyway.

There are CF cell cards, including such as:

http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?code=137049
http://www.bostonpocketpc.com/modules.php?

AFAIK the PDA data plan is not limited to pda/phones that Cingular
carries. Nor technically is the PDA data plan even required--if your
usage is light a MediaNet plan would work. If your usage *is* heavy you
might be better off looking at a dedicated card from "another" carrier--
Cingular's data plans are a bit pricey.

How so? Unlimited use pricing is competitive with other carriers.

Not really a big deal -- I do it all the time.

One issue I would see with swapping SIM cards back and forth all the
time is what happens if someone attempts to call when the SIM is in
the PCMCIA card? You obviously can't answer it.

I see that a call is coming in (on the PC Card software), and the call
goes to voicemail of course. That's usually fine with me.

If that is fine with you, then it is fine. But during pauses using
the phone, it might be nice if you could answer the phone.
