Author PDA - which one?
Sam

2006-07-29, 4:33 am

I'm finally going to get one of those PDA this week at my nearby Cingular
store.

I don't have and never a contract but I've always stuck with BS/Cingular.
So I could get a rebate/discount on nice PDA under a contract or just buy it
retail.

I want the PDA to have Windows Mobile 5.0 or 2003 if its still better.

Via Cingular web site, they have this Cingular 8125 with the pull out
keyboard. There is another similar model with the keyboard on the front.
But I don't see Cingular offering this model at the web site.

So my question, which one do you recommend? This is my desire:

- Mostly for phone, so I want to still have excellent
voice quality.

- Windows Mobile

- I would like for it have a pen device.

- The side keyboard looks ok, but will it break after long usage
and opening and closing, etc, being that its on the side?

- I want to be able to add stuff to it, like maybe more memory?
A disk drive? Or connect to my PC to upload stuff to it?

That 8125 looks it has everything I want. But does it work well? Any
problems?

Can I buy a PDA from somewhere else and have Cingular service? Or are they
going to play games "Oh, you have to buy it from us!" ??

Thanks

If you want a full keyboard the only other models listed are HP IPAQs, one a
discontinued model and the other refurbished. If you decide you want an
IPAQ wait a little bit as there will be a new one coming shortly. There are
a few other PDAs listed there (Palm & Blackberry) but neither run the
Windows Mobile operating system. If you want Windows I would suggest the
5.0 version. You can buy from another vendor but I would suggest getting
one designed for the Cingular system. You can get an unlocked model
elsewhere and get it to work okay but usually takes a lot of tweaking
(especially) internet to do so. Chance are unless you have a specific model
that you really want that is not designed for Cingular you will get a better
price if get a Cingular phone.

To answer the last question first, YES you can buy an unlocked model
elsewhere, drop your existing sim card into it and it'll work. Cingular
doesn't even need to know you have it. If you want data you may have to
tweak some settings (it helps if your "official" phone support GPRS that
way you can get CS to help with that one). The settings are pretty easy
to find on the internet anyway.

The 8125 is the HTC Wizard and is available under several brands (i-Mate
K-JAM, T-Mobile MDA, others). HTC makes good stuff--most users are VERY
happy with theirs. Also available is the HTC Prophet (i-Mate JAMin)
which is basically the Wizard without the sliding keyboard. It's an
upgrade of the original HTC Magician (i-Mate JAM) with WM5 instead of
2003, wifi, EDGE, and a 2meg camera.

Here's a site that shows most of the pda/phones (not "Smartphones" most
of which don't use a stylus):
http://www.davespda.com/hardware/pd...ition/index.php

I swap back and forth between a GAIT Nokia 6340i and the i-Mate JAM with
no problems at all. Of course I don't have TDMA or AMPS on the JAM but I
don't need it in town. Since the Nokia doesn't have GPRS at all I might
not be able to add a data package but pay-as-you-go GPRS works fine as
does CSD which is what I actually use. I've been really pleased with the
JAM--don't think I could go back to carrying seperate PDA and phone all
the time.

sim card? That must be the little white "plastic or cardboard" looking
square card that is inserted in a band under the battery that I saw in my
wife's newer (el cheapo/free) Nokia. I don't have it my older Nokia. She
said they (cingular) sent her this card and she put it in.

So I have to unlock it with this cingular SIM card? That probably means
they will use this as a basis to get the unit from them.

I can imagine. Although it will be my personal phone, I just want to get my
feet wet with the PDA programming aspect for the most part (I'm a software
product developer) and see what kind of things I can do with it. I did the
same with my current phone with WAP, saw it was still premature for anything
we want so I didn't bother with that feature any more. With Windows now
coming to the Phone (or is it the Phone coming to Windows? <g> ), I can now
explore more options. But I am sure I will be able to utilize basic email,
simple notes taking etc with it. So I can imagine the benefits for a person
as myself. :-)

I think the only thing I am still alittle sketchy with, and your jargon
above reminded me of this, is the basic communications between the PDA and
some home (hosting server) system. I am more familar with RS232 dialup and
PPP connectivity as that we do for our own products. I still not sure what
"BlueTooth" is, but I am getting the idea it is basically a short range
wireless connection feature. I always thought that it was a "Service."

I am under the impression, that like WAP where I had to pay service fee to
establish a PPP connection to some BS PPP server to establish an internet
connection, that this is still true with the PDA. I don't know if thats
now under some terminology called TMDA, AMPS, JAM or whatever :-)

What I would like to be able to do is go ahead and pay the extra require fee
to get the benefits of the builtin email service, normal customer stuff, and
then also be able to explore (without paying a fee) connecting to my
development hosting servers to explore new development. i.e, like dialing
into my PPP server or RS232 hosting servers where I can then present my own
hosting interface, etc.

Can I do this with BlueTooth or some other wireless lan connectivity idea or
are we force to go thru thier network for all connectivity?

Sound pretty basic, but my research doesn't make that all very clear. :-)

Thanks

Actually the Palm Treo 700w runs Windows Mobile 5.0. But ... only on Verizon
at the moment.

If I may butt in,

I believe I saw a reference to a new PALM in the works that will suppose WM
in the microsoft.public.pocketpc.developers NG. Search for the still active
subject thread: "Future sales of Windows PDAs vs. Palm PDAs."

It turned out to be a which OS will prevail discussion, but I recall my
interest spike up when I read in one of the messages, there as a Palm in the
works that will support the WM OS as well. I recall finding it interesting
because in other research I was doing for my purchase of a PDA, research
seems to indicate that voice quality wise, the Palm PDA is currently on top.
The HP IPAQ also got a high rating as well.

Let's just say I have a connection. Cingular is still waiting for the 700p
also.
