| Travelled to Chicago this week.
Near my home in Texas, I have very good service from Cingular. An
occasional dropped call, but overall, not bad.
The service near the airport in Chicago was incredibly bad.
In the three days there, I probably had 30 dropped calls.
In the three days there, my phone did not ring once, but I received
about 12 voice messages. Callers going straight to VM.
I called Cingular to ask what was going on and the nice girl said there
was a lot of 'Convergence' in that area.
??
She gave me 100 roll-over minutes.

Do you have the new 64-bit SIM?
Sprint used to be very bad in Chicago at one time as well. I suspect there
are some issues with PCS and tower location [limitted range] that might cause
capacity issues [fewer towers for the same area]. Just a guess on my part.
So, if you get the new SIM, perhaps you will have better luck getting access
to all the towers Cingular has to offer in that area?

| Sprint was recently rated the best in Chicago by a study performed by
Chicago Channel 7 several months ago.

Interesting turn around. My Brother was there two years ago and said service
was just OK; he had no real complaints. I am glad to see that Sprint really
has taken action on customer complaints.

I have no idea. The phone's only a couple months old. Bought at a
Cingular Store in Dallas.

Any way to check if I have the new SIM?
Thanks,

| Tommy TV,
I visit the Chicago suburbs 3 times per year (I am origianlly from
Naperville) and the Sprint service there has been very good. Note that
Chicago was not one of the first cities to deploy GSM.

Take out the SIM and look at it. 64K SIMs are marked "64K".

Any SIM gets access to all towers. All the new (64K) SIM enables is
changing of the home network. See the FAQ below.

| Where exactly were you? Reception at the airport is pretty good- I have had
some recent experience there. Away from there- although cingular has
appreciably improved service in my area (far north side of Chicago) there
are still dead zones which are consistently poor and calls are frequently
dropped. But-reception within my home and office are noticeably better than
one year ago. Just don't ask me about my aunt's home in central
Wisconsin-where my tdma phone had 5 bars and I can't get any connection with
gsm. Think about it- I can listen to AM radio from Chicago (220 miles away)
but 30 miles from Oshkosh there's no signal from Cingular (and they don't
care).

1. That's a meaningless analogy -- those are totally different radio
systems. Or can you make outgoing calls on your AM radio? ;)
2. Of course Cingular cares, but can't be expected to be perfect
everywhere, any more than any other carrier.
