Dell PDA connect to GPRS problem
|
|
|
| I have a Dell X50 PDA with Bluetooth that works fine. I also have a
Motorola V551 that I have owned for a couple of years, also works fine.
I occasionally access the internet through the phone and/or using the
PDA. I access weather charts once or twice a month. I really don't
use much data each time so I always used the MediaNet package where I
paid per KB transferred.
I have used this setup for a year or two with no problems. I can
access the internet using the phone with no problem. I could also
access the internet with the PDA using the phone as a modem. I used
the WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM address and the CINGULAR1 password and used
*99# as my dialing number.
Just to reiterate...this worked fine for a year or so. Now last night
I decided to upgrade my MediaNet package to the $4.99 package that has
a meg or two of data included before you get billed .01 per KB. I did
this as I am beginning to use about $8 per month of data on the pay as
you go plan.
No problem with customer service, and my phone acesses the internet
with no problem, but now the PDA will no longer access it. It connects
to the phone alright via bluetooth, tries to dials out and connects,
but then terminates with a message that THE CONNECTION FAILED AND COULD
NOT BE RESTABLISHED.
I haven't changed a thing on the phone or the PDA. I've read the wiki
and it looks like nothing has changed at Cingular. I hate to call
customer service unless I know EXACTLY what to ask for since I am aware
that this form of tethering is technically not allowed.
The only thing I have noticed, is if I go into my phones bluetooth
settings, on the screen where I put in the user ID
(WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM) and password (CINGULAR1), the password box has a
LOT more ********'s than there should be. There should only be 9,
(CINGULAR1). Even if I retype in the correct password, after I try to
connect and it fails, if I come back to the connection manager screen,
there are a lot more ************'s then there should be. Did Cingular
change something? Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?
Thanks in advance
Mike

Try all the combinations of:
WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM
*99***1#
*99***3#
I noticed that 1# won't work on *MY* Bluetooth, but works with a cable
and 3# works on both. YMMV

|
| Thanks.....I tried all 9 or so combinations and that doesn't seem to
help.
The only two things I can think of...
1. This problem started RIGHT after I upgraded my MediaNet package
with customer service.
2. When I enter a password during my PDA bluetooth setup, and when I
return to that screen after being unable to connect....the stored
password is now twice as long. Something weird is happening here.
thanks for the advice tho....

Check you username. I had this problem with a laptop setup. When I
was PPU I used ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM, but with MediaNet Bundles it
wouldnt work and the "ISP" portion also may get you into trouble for
the tethering. Try "WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM" for the username.

With my setup, when you want to tether, the important place to put the
informatio is in the PDA. The information placed in the phone is for
when you connect directly from the phone.
So maybe something got messed up on the PDA.

First the issue of the *****. The device will fill the extra spaces with
**** so that no one could simply look at the space like you are looking at
it and thinking "Hmmmm the password has 9 letters in it. This is common for
password fields.
As for the second issue - I suspect that this is one of those issues where
you are stuck between the rock and the hard place. If you want to call
Cingular and get help then they will tell you that you need to add a data
connect plan or a PDA Connect plan. This would be so that the isp.cingular
would be provisioned in your account. It is possible that you already had
that APN on your account and that changing the data plan to the media net
plan caused the billing system to make a "Correction" in the provisioning
and deleted the isp.cingular APN.
So what is the solution? It looks like you have tried a lot of stuff
already and that is not working. There are many persons here who would be
able to tell you how to tether a device with the wap.cingular APN. I am
under the impression that the wap.cingular APN will only allow you to go to
a limited number of sites, including wap enabled sites and would pretty much
be useless for "real" browsing.
You might google this combination of information and see what the net has to
say.
Good luck!

Has Mike checked the FAQs at Navas web page?
| |
|
| I have a feeling that you are correct.......
I have checked all the FAQ's and am pretty sure at this point that
cingular probably turned off the data connect option when I "upgraded"
It's not that big a deal as I can get my weather maps on my cell
phone.......It's just that the PDA has a larger screen and can animate
things.
I will probably call cingular cusotmer service and see if I can get the
data connect back on....I have nothing to lose....all thay can do is
say no
Thanks everyone!
