UK Phone: Need Cingular proxy IP address
|

| I probably made a mistake, and bought an unlocked cell phone from a bargin
computer tech center. I have a Samsung SGH-D820. Nice phone, good reception.
I believe it was set up for UK use as this was the default time zone settings.
However, it doesn't give me a choice of setting the cingular proxy address to
"wireless.cingular.com", it only has an IP address setting. As a consequence,
I am not able to access GPRS or GSM features. My setting from my old phone
have the password shown as *********.
Could anyone let me know what IP address and password I should be using to
complete my configuration?
Thanks! David

Sorry...quite a newbie on this subject. I did fix one glaring error in the
password is now all caps. But if I am reading the FAQS correctly..should I be
loading the gateway IP address as the IP adress for the "proxy address" (66.
209.11.61)? My old phones proxy address was "wireless.cingular.com". The new
phone wnats a IP address for the proxy address.
I'm not sure I am understanding what I am reading....and therefore probably
testing your patience. I do appreciate your help.

I'm likewise having trouble understanding what you mean by "proxy
address". "GSM features" don't require anything like that. GRPS
requires a *gateway* (or APN, not proxy) -- either wap.cingular (for
MEdia Net) or isp.cingular (for DataConnect). This is covered in the
FAQ at
<http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/ Cingu....2FEGPRS.2FEDGE>.
Which package do you have?

GPRS and here's the menu tree: (after the colon is the field values from my
old phone)
Profile Name: MEdia Net
Home URL: http://device.home
Bearer: GPRS First
Proxy use: Enable
GPRS Setting
Proxy address: wireless.cingular.com *(This is where my new phone
only allows an IP address for the proxy add)
Proxy port: 80
APN: wap.cingular
Login ID: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
GSM Setting
Proxy address: wireless.cingular.com *(This is where my new phone
only allows an IP address for the proxy add)
Proxy port: 80
Dial Number: +14152441012
APN: wap.cingular
Login ID: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Data Call Type: ISDN
The default IP address in the phone when I purchased it was 203.177.42.214
which belongs to Globe Telecom, in the Phillipines.

GPRS is not a package. Your choices with Cingular are:
1. Pay as you go
2. MEdia Net
3. DataConnect.
Which do you have? It's important.

Perhaps that's the _gateway_ address, in which case it should be
66.209.11.61 (as per my link above).

Valid for MEdia Net, not DataConnect.

If setting the "proxy address" to the Cingular gateway IP doesn't work,
try turning proxy off.
