HELL of a device. I want one! But I don't like being locked into
a carrier. I HATE exclusives. :(

I don't believe that there is no 3G on the iPhone. That would not make
any sense at all. The pre-show information stated that there would be
two versions, one 3G, one EDGE. Maybe the 3G version is delayed by a few
months so they didn't want to announce it.

You're only locked into Cingular if you want a iPhone.

Wait 5 years for the Zune 3, and maybe it'll be close.

True. But it does support 802.11g if you happen to be in range of a wi-fi network.

This is of course a big coup for Cingular,
and bad news for competing carriers.

And, in either case, be locked into a proprietary music file format.
Interesting that people who are unwilling to be locked into a cell
carrier, but see nothing wrong with buying music hardware (including
the iPhone) that locks the user into buying music from one source. Am
I missing something, here? :-)

I think another interesting side news bit -
is how much did it cost Apple to "get" the iPhone name from Cisco ?

No question it is an awesome phone. Just another revolutionary step by
Apple. A big issue however, is the tie in with Cingular. That
association will prove to be a noose around iPhone's neck.

Cingular is old-school in all aspects, right down to their crappy
customer service and constant "take it or leave it" attitude toward
customers.

Good for you! But exploring new music is part of the whole digital
music thing. Not much exploration in ripping what you already have.
But it does guarantee that you like what's going on your player. :-)

Since the iphone is gsm, which other North American gsm provider would
you suggest might give better coverage?

Yup. The bean counters are hard at work. But, if you think Cingular's
CS & attitude toward retention are bad, read the posts here & elsewhere
about Verizon & Sprint/Nextel.

The superior sound quality of CD as compared with that of the digital
download, combined with the fact that costs about the same and you can
burn all your own music you want make it far better. Doesn't take an
audiophile to hear the difference, either.
