Author Frustrated with iTunes for iPhone; is there an alternative to iTunes?

Totally frustrated with the restrictions associated with iTunes and
the iPhone. Especially Jobs requiring the purchase of Apple
ringtones; Guess what Steve -- it will be a cold day in Hell before I
purchase ringtones from Apple.

At this point I m countigte months until my contract expires and I can
dump this crap and get a real phone.

In the meantime are there any real alternatives to iTunes? How has
Apple managed to hide the iPhone directory structure from Windows?

Do it now, then. Because iPhone customers paid an unsubsidized price for
their iPhone, they generally qualify for "upgrade pricing" on any AT&T
phone, even though they're already under contract.

No offense, but is the ability to make your own ringtones for free all
that distinguishes a "real phone" from "crap" in your mind? And if so,
why did you buy an iPhone in the first place? It's inability to add
ringtones was pretty well publicized from the start.

Not certain what your point is but personally I use the ringtone to
distingush who is calling and especially since I get all too many
wrong calls because the telco has switched area codes in my region.

No offense taken and you have raised points that I have argued within
myself about the iPhone.

The negatives for the iPhone in my experience have been, the volume
level for the ringer is too low and the phone reception is terrible. I
can sit with a Razr using AT&T and have service while the iPhone show
"No Service".

There are however features for which Apple should be applauled and
some have. What I am most impressed with is the battery life.

But, getting back to my primary concer is iTunes and finding a
replacement for it. Any viable options?

Winamp, Songbird to name a few.

I guess that depends on what you're trying to accomplish. I don't own an
iPhone, but I have an iPod Nano and don't use iTunes- the Nano appears as
a drive letter and I drag and drop my music files on it. I assume that's
possible with an iPhone, but doesn't help with contacts and calandar items.

I agree with you. I could care less about the contact and calander
items. But... Apple has successfully hidden the iPhone when connected
to the computer. Not in Explorer and not in Network.

Successfully for some, not all. My iPhone has been jailbroken since 1.0--and
I am now running 1.1.1 (jailbroken).

"Jailbreak," BTW essentially means breaking out of the sandbox that Apple
placed around the file system.

Ergo I can see, edit, change, copy, etc., any file on the iPhone (and add
apps, run scripts, set up cron jobs, etc.).

Does this mean it's now trivial to add music without iTunes? No, definitely
not. I'm not going to get into it here, but suffice to say that songs are
not played directly on the iPhone. They play contingent upon entries in a
database that is created/managed by iTunes. This database is not just a list
of songs, it contains links to album art, play counts, etc. Some of this
data is then sent back to iTunes (e.g., favorite tracks).

Finally, you can add ringtones to even non-jailbroken 1.1.1 iPhones using
the latest version of iToner (Mac) or this method (PC):

I use a ATT Sony-Ericcson Walkman phone. Stuck a 4 Gig M2 Ram card in
it. Built in memory is one drive letter, ram card another. But iPhone
wont show up as a disk drive thereby preventing drag and drop.
