Unwanted Text Messages
|
|
|
| Hi,
I've been getting tons of text messages from support@mms.att.net,
info@mms.att.net, account@mms.att.net , etc. saying that I've been banned,
suspended and you name it. These are being sent to an email
name@mms.att.net which is then going to my phone.
I've called ATT numerous times about this and they say it's not them and
they don't know how to stop it. Needless to say this is not a very
satisfying answer. From my perspective, I'm being spammed continuously by
ATT under all these names. There name is the only one on it so I would
think they would want to stop it because it's probably going to others as
well.
Anyone else have this problem or any idea how I can stop this? The only
solution offered is to cancel my text abilities but I need this capability
for work so that's not an option.
Thoughts appreciated.
Bob

I've heard of SMS spam, etc. Most likely someone has gotten hold of
your cell phone number (very likely....lol) and well, all they need to
know is your # and the att/cingular "SMS Gateway" address, and they
are free to send you any "email" you want...what stinks is from what I
understand there is no way to stop it...my sister has been getting
similar messages, though not from att/cingular...
What's the context of the messages? Any web links or URLs?

I have ATT detailed billing and online billing. I think it's ATT that will
sort the billing by columnar heading.
I do not have unlimited messaging but accept a limited amount from family
and friends.
I just checked the last two months statements; the statement shows incoming
text messages by telephone number.
You should be able to call the sending party via that number. You didn't say
what state you are in, but I might claim they are sending unwanted faxes
which I think is a federal offense or claim stalking depending on your
state. I kept getting Spanish speaking cell phone calls. A reverse number
lookup wasn't fruitful, but a Google search was. I then had a friend in
Florida drive by and take a picture for me. It wasn't a professional looking
building.
Then I called the company and explained they could stop or I'd start pinging
their computers with viruses. Amazing, it stopped that day.

| Well I haven't looked at the bill yet but I will. The text of the messages
say things like I have been banned for sending large messages, etc. and to
fill out this form to be reinstated. Garbage like that.
The return email addresses are an assortment of *****@mms.att.net addresses.
They say they don't belong to them but at the same time the only addresses I
have have their name all over them so I have one else to complain to.
Thoughts appreciated.

The from address in an e-mail can be forged.

These are, based on what you've said, phish attempts.
There likely isn't a way for AT&T to stop them.

Change your name@mms.att.net e-mail address.

They could, if they wanted to. But it would require effort on their
part to design, develop and deploy a txt/mms filtering system.

Do a Google Search for an 800 number for "President's Office" and call
and complain to them. How about changing your account name
@mms.att.net ??
