My update worked perfectly.
As for the others who unblocked their phones, too bad.
Apple's responsibility is to provide an update that works on an
unmodified system and if someone who modified their system uses an
update, they are taking their chances. By modifying the iphone, the
owner has broken the warranty responsibility of Apple.
Besides that, who forced iphone owners who hacked their phones to apply
the update? They could live with their hacked, unlocked phones the way
they are.

the update process is going quite well no major issues for anyone so
far. I've done 6 of them this week and nary a hickup... apple really did
their homework and makes stuff like this a breeze. be sure to watch the
video at the link below, they even provide a helpful "dude" to explain
all the new features. well done...
* iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
* Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
* Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
* Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
* Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
* Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
* Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
* Support for TV Out
* Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
* New Passcode lock time intervals
* Adjustable alert volume

yes, the update does nothing to hurt your phone, just install and it
auto restarts.
sure, people with soldering irons may have to reverse what they did, but
nobody has lost an iphone over this great update!

Apple has discovered that some of the unauthorized unlocking programs
available on the Internet may cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's
software. IF YOU HAVE MODIFIED YOUR IPHONE'S SOFTWARE, APPLYING THIS
SOFTWARE UPDATE MAY RESULT IN YOUR IPHONE BECOMING PERMANENTLY INOPERABLE.
Making unauthorized modifications to the software on your iPhone violates
the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use your iPhone
to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under your iPhone's

Silly, even stupid comments in this one:
"Apple may look like a bully, because it is fighting music publishers
that want to raise prices." Doesn't make sense.
"If Apple cared about early adopters, they'd have paid more than the
difference to early adopters." Who does that? Who expects it?
Few people want AT&T as a carrier." It's always one of the top three,
but apparently people who want to complain ignore everyone who choses
it on purpose.
"None of the hacks to unlock the iPhone would be necessary if it
weren't for the AT&T deal." Wrong; many of the hacks are to allow
third-party apps to load, which the same article claims elsewhere.
"Fans will buy whatever Apple makes." Even a brief check shows this
isn't true, and has never even been close to true.
"Apple risks its customer service reputation by entering a large
market." Doesn't even make sense. The iPod market is already much
larger, and it has hugely positive reviews!

Huh. Because you think there are many people who have hacked their
phones?
I doubt even the mainstream press can screw up this one -- people who
decided to ignore their contract screwed up. No one is going to claim
they are victims!

You've just made yourself look like a complete fool.
No one has been screwed by Jobs, by Apple, or by the iPhone.
People who wanted to hack the device screwed themselves; completely,
totally, unquestionably their own doing.
I don't know any situation where Apple or Jobs have ever screwed
customers -- what examples do you think you are referring to?

Companies that want their initial product rollout to fuel the fire, not
put it out.

Any customer in a mature market where certain functionality is a given
at a certain price point.

The AT&T data network is the slowest of the three. Anybody serious
about data speeds typically uses Verizon or Sprint

Maybe the article should have read, "Fans will blindly push whatever
Apple makes." That is and has been very true.

It most certainly does make sense. The mp3 player market was in its
infancy when Apple rolled out the first iPod. In this case, they are
entering a mature market and do run the risk of destroying their
reputation, based on the expectations already in play.

Read the press- a bunch of people have and it is turning into a PR
nightmare for Apple.

Ah, Apple's bread and butter is the Mac, it pulls in about 12 Billion in
revenue. The iPod is next and pulls in about 9 billion, then "so far",
the iPhone has sold around 1,300,000 units so about 520 million. So the
iPhone is Apple's smallest part of their barrel.
The Mac is the superstar of Apple's sales, so expect a big day tomorrow
when all the numbers are released. You can join in the fun starting at:

will begin at 2pm PT/5pm ET on Monday, October 22, 2007.

If people considered the phone to be worth $600, precisely how did they
get screwed? If they didn't consider it to be worth $600, why did they
buy it?

my logic illustrated the actual drop, $599 to $399 with $100 credit, so
it dropped by $100, not by "$200".
> ITYM, "it really went from $500 to $400."
yes, if you bought the $499 model it was discontinued, but you still got
the $100 credit, so it went from $499 to $399.
i used another one of my credits last night, bought a $99 4GB iPod,
which cost me $4.56 with tax, it will go up on ebay tonight, sell for
around $139, so I'll made around $130 back from the $100 credit, so this
particular iPhone technically cost $369. sweet!

Generally, I agree with you.
But perception is reality, and many--most--all?--of those customers who
were in that position would disagree with you.

Top three in what? Maybe in subscribers, but every customer survey I've

| An important note on this subject:
It was NOT $100 back - it was a CREDIT.
There is a HUGE difference.
A credit forces you into the store to buy something.
It forces you to actually spend more.
Spend on something with a healthy markup I'm sure.
The NET is much less than $100 in reality.

Let's not forget sales tax! Yea I know that ain't Apple's issue, but that
makes the $100 more like $85 (in many states).
Also, you can't use the credit for iTunes Store purchases. Personally, I
found that odd.

no. it's actually MORE than $100 back in cash. my example of buying a
$99 4GB iPod illustrates the point. I spent $5ish on tax, free shipping.
sell it on ebay will net at least $139, remove the fees and you get
around $130 in CASH back...
so the "credit" is only if you don't understand how markets work.

ah, not necessarily. in my case i converted an online transaction to $30
MORE than the $100 Steve gave back to everyone, without stepping a foot
in an Apple Store. But, yes in most cases people that have purchased an
iPhone will be back for more Apple products very quickly since they
understand the great value it brings. They get $100 back in "value" and
are happy.

The "NET GAIN" worked out to $130 in PURE CASH in my case at +5%
interest.

Perhaps because when the price fell $200 the perception of the iPhone's
value fell,. Perception is everything, as Jobs rapidly realised, hence
the $100 "rebate".

Look at the current completed listings. The only ones that hope to
realize that amount are those doing a BIN, and even then only a couple
have sold. The rest are well under. What's your feedback rating, and
have you sold related products before? an eBay newbie or anything less
than a 99% pos is going to put your chances even less.

There are a HUGE number of iPods who's completed auctions show ZERO
bids. Many more for less $$$ than stated below. Lots of supply, not anywhere
near as high of demand.
Bottom line - GOOD "business" says that this is FAR from a sure thing.
In fact "business" would say that it is, in reality, very BAD business.
Certainly, only a complete idiot would think otherwise, like (Oxford) below.

so you don't know how to work ebay it seems, do a "completed" listing

average is $139... and since my perfect feedback ensures i'll at least

I don't. The gross margin on Apple hardware is 40-50%, while the margin
on iTunes songs is likely 10% or less. Tha $100 credit would cost Apple
nearly $100 at iTMS, vs. the $50-60 it costs them if you redeem it for
hardware.

I'm not, but I'm really sick and XXXXing tired of people posting all the
iPhone crap in newsgroups dedicated to CARRIERS WHOSE NETWORKS THE iPHONE
WON'T EVEN RUN ON.
Alt.cellular.cingular, OK. Alt.cellular.tmobile, OK, at least it's the
same technology. .verizon, .sprintpcs, .alltel - come on, those customers
couldn't use a GSM iPhone even if it was unlocked. I've seen posts in all
of those newsgroups. .nokia? Why? So some drooling Apple fanboy can tell us
all how much Nokia sucks?
My take is that the iPhone is cool. I wouldn't buy one, but I can understand
why other people might. But several newsgroups have been overrun by iPhone
posts. It's obnoxious. Go away already; many (most?) of us don't care.

no, Cozmic... apple keeps around 20 profit on each song. the reason you
are confused is you bought into the RDF when steve said "we don't make
much on the itunes store". and yes, i realize you don't know much about
RDF or apple, or business for that matter. but that was a "bluff". (look
it up)
steve was simply tricking potential competitors by making it sound like
there wasn't any money in downloadable music. we all knew that was
untrue, now we know apple makes 29 cents per song, and about 9 cents
goes for overhead.
please learn more about business before you post again.

On the contrary, dear child- based on your somewhat childish rants, I'm
willing to be that I graduated college (the first time) beforre you were
born, got my MBA before you could talk and was programming on Apple
computers before you got out of diapers. Since then, I have worked my way

using technology that you have shown an inability to comprehend. Now, I

I'm afraid that your experience as an Apple stockboy doesn't do you any
good here.

A bluff on their quarterly investors' call? Hardly. Unlike you, I heard

Perhaps they should retain Oxford/Bill Gates/etc. as their marketing

Oxford says...
"yes, i know apple better than anyone posting here and know the apple

Hey- everybody needs a diversion. I have the luxury of not needing to
travel a whole lot (thanks to technology). I also have the additional
luxury of having offices of those three companies within easy driving
distance of the house, which gives me face-to-face access when needed at

the PC tower to spank the likes of little Oxtard and Navas, with the World

Well, it's up to you or someone to find the documented "crucial" link
between the two. It certainly wasn't in the link Maverick provided.
So you are the 2nd person falling into Elmo's little game with his own

Okay, Oxford. You've been given numerous opportunities to find it your
self- here's another clue:
http://www.smalltalk.org/alankay.html
But having to provide this to you really does show your own shortcomings

it's because there is no connection. the only link is she was at PARC
when Apple paid for a visit. She didn't go to Apple like 8 other PARC
researchers did, nor did she contribut to the LISA or Mac, so she is a
figment of Elmo's imagination.

Fact is, Adele helped type up some manuals, put out cookies and

Adele didn't contribute anything to Apple or Steve Jobs.
