Unlimited Data Overseas?
|
|

| I have a Samsung A707 with an unlimited date plan for 19.95 per month.
I will soon be traveling to Europe. Does the unlimited data plan apply
overseas? Or will I even get a connection? It would be nice to check
email.
Thanks,
C

The unlimited data plan you have doesn't apply overseas. If your
account is enabled for international roaming (you need this for the
voice service to work as well) I think you'll get a connection, but
you'll pay by the kilobyte for the data (about 2 cents/kilobyte,
I think).
AT&T does have a couple of plans that include some international
roaming data, a laptop plan which includes 100 MB of international
data for $140/month and a cheaper one for PDAs which includes
20 MB. Both plans require a year's commitment, but you might be
able to cancel the plan without penalty if you do so before the
30 day trial period is up, and hence just pay for the month you
are away. Note that I've never done the latter, but the terms of
service seem to say it is possible.
When travelling to a country where I'll be for more than a few
days I usually find it better to buy local prepaid phone service,
either when I get there or from the Internet before I go.

You were right on the mark Dennis. I was gone for three weeks and used
the data connection almost daily to check email and catch up on news and
sports. Total data use charge for the trip was about $30, well worth it
for the convenience.
