Porting number to cingular

| When porting my number to cingular, should I expect there to be any
time when neither of my phones will work? Or will one of them continue
to work at all times?

When I ported from Cingular to Sprint, I already had a temporary Sprint
number, and the porting process immediately shut down the Cingular phone,
replaced the temporary Sprint number with my existing Cingular number, and I
began receiving calls immediately on my new carrier. The process took about
15 minutes for the rep to complete, but my new Sprint phone was completely
active throughout.
Remember to NOT tell your old carrier that you are leaving, because if they
shut down your number, your new carrier will not be able to port it, and you
will have to get a new phone number. I have read that the carrier about to
lose the customer may mistakenly shut down the service on purpose, if you
get my meaning. The port should come as a surprise. After it is done, you
can call your old carrier to arrange for payment of your final bill, etc.

Your original phone should work until the port process has completed.
There may be a time under certain circumstances where you will be able
to receive calls on one phone and make calls on another, but like I
said those are rare instances. Since the porting because some time ago
things have gotten much better and the port process can occur now in
just a couple of hours. So continue to use your phone like normal and
when it stops working try the new one.

It's a very common occurance. For instance if your old company had you
living on Jones Street, and Cingular transcribes it as Jones St.; the
Port may delayed and there could ays (happened to me - 2 1/2 days)
when the phone can make calls but not receive calls.
So a simple no, is absolutely wrong. Google alt.cellular.cingular, and
porting;
for various tales of porting grief, some Cingular's fault, some the
prior carrier's fault.

There will often be times when the Cingular phone will not work, due to
the fact that their coverage is much poorer than Verizon's coverage.

Cingular now has arguably the best digital coverage of any carrier.
That said, different carriers have different coverage in different areas
-- there is no one best carrier -- so you should check to see how actual
coverage compares in areas you care about. In areas I care about here
in the San Francisco Bay Area, Cingular is significantly better than any
other carrier.

Based on what? They can't even cite an authoritative source on their
commercials. This is nothing but urban legend unless data can be provided.
