If I buy cingulars prepaid "gophone" service, and I buy a phone
through them, will the sim card and/or phone be "locked" or "unlocked"?

Don't know if this helps, but I have a friend with Cingualr who crunched
his Treo, didn't want to commit to a service plan, so bought a Gophone
and used his Treo sim. Don't know how the phone might work with other
carriers.

All Cingular phones are sold subsidy locked to Cingular SIM cards.

I'm not sure what you mean by asking if the SIM card is "locked". Will it
work on an unlocked non-Cingular phone? Yes.

Most, but not all -- from time to time Cingular has sold some unlocked
phones.

I'm talking about the present, since the wording of the OP's question
implies he has not yet made the purchase.
