Do I have to inform my current carrier that I'm transfering the number
to a new carrier? Or does the new carrier do that for me or what?

You need do nothing.

Tell the new carrier to port your number(s). That's all.

When the port is complete, you will get a message on your new phone that
the port is complete.

You need do NOTHING with your old carrier. You need not contact them
one bit. In fact, the way the system is set up, contacting them would
only hurt you. Let the number porting system do its thing.

When the number porting system does its thing and the number port is
complete, your account with the old carrier is automatically cancelled.

I've done this with cell and most recently land lines. It's all
automatic. Just tell the new carrier to port your number over.

Really.
