E-mail Access on SonyEricsson T68i
|

| I have lost the ability to retrieve e-mail from my T68i over the past week or
two (don't use it more than once every one or two weeks, hence no specific
date.) The error message is "server not found" when trying to "Send and
Retrieve Mail" on the phone.
Cingular support has been unable to help me and I can still access the web
from my phone, including the domain of the e-mail server, which suggests that
the name lookup for the e-mail domain still works. The e-mail domain, by the
way, is hosted by one of the largest hosting companies in the U.S.
Any ideas what I should look into?

| You are not using Cingular's mail server. Shame on You!
(Try unannounced change in service)

I called Cingular before posting this message, they had no explanation.
What are you hinting at?

1. Change in required mail server settings; e.g., SSL/TLS instead of
unencryped access.
2. Glitch in DNS. Try numeric IP address.
3. Change in provisioning of your Cingular account. Does web browsing
work?

| John,
None, accessing the mail account from my regular e-mail program on my
computer works fine. The domain is controlled by me and I have not made any
changes, further, the hosting company denies having done anything on their
end.
Browsing the website for the domain on the phone also works fine suggesting
that the DNS has the correct information.

"Assumption is the mother of all screwups." -Jeff Liebermann
Your email program may simply be better able to deal with some change
than your phone client.
For example, I saw a similar problem when an ISP changed their email to
only accept unencrypted connections through their own network.
Naturally there was no problem when connecting from a computer on that
network, but cell connections were blocked. The ISP first said nothing
had changed. Later it was, "Oh, you mean the network restriction? That
was just fixing an old problem. Didn't know that's what you meant."
Since the cell phone (like the T68i) couldn't do encrypted connections,
the choices were to replace the cell phone or switch to a different
email service. (The cell phone was replaced.)

As I wrote, try the numeric IP address. That takes DNS out of the
equation.
You should also try some other email service.
p.s. Please don't switching posting styles in mid-thread (top vs
bottom) -- it's confusing.

I've not seen any evidence of that -- have you?
p.s. Please don't switch posting styles (top vs bottom) in mid-thread

| Chuck, OK, which ports have Cingular begun blocking? If you have this
information, why don't you share it rather than play coy about it?
