From what I understand, the system estimates the distance the phone is
from the towers to allow "triangulation" with two towers instead of three.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true, since they can use triangultion
when satellite data isn't available, so in theory, when the satellite
data is available it works better, and when not, it works like Cingular's
system.

The advantage of the "less accurate" Cingular system, IMHO, is the
universal compatibility with any GSM phone. One of the reasons I refer
GSM is the freedom to use whatever handset I want- I'll frequently switch
from my expensive PDA phone to a six year-old relic if I'm in a "hostile
environment" like the beach, for example, or doing dirty work. Verizon,
for example, wouldn't let me switch to a six year-old phone because it
isn't "E911 compliant."
