Question about 8525 with this activated condition:

Activated with ONLY a "regular" voice plan - NO extra media
or data add-ons......

Is it possible to still be able to access the Web sites via
the built-in FREE wireless Wi-Fi using Internet Explorer to
Internet Web sites?

I temporarily have in my possession a 8525 using my SIM card
from a regular Cingular voice phone activated for a regular
voice-type plan.
I can make regular voice and texting calls with the 8525.
I can also "cruise the Web" OK via Cingular 3G here.
And, yes this does incur extra monthly per-kilobytes billing
charges, as expected.

HOWEVER........

When I turn-on the Wireless feature.
I can access neighborhood Wi-Fi Access Points, including my
own.
AND, I can "see" the 8525 in my router's network Log when
connected to my own wireless network access point.
However, when I command Internet Explorer to go to an
Internet Web site such as Google, Ebay, "whatever", IE just
"hangs" stating the term: "Locating............." until it
eventually all times-out, and goes "nowhere".

The reason I am asking is that I have a strong suspicion
that Cingular/ATT locks-out that FREE Wi-Fi accessing
feature unless your plan also includes Media or Data
add-ons.

I also have an activated Sprint (HTC) PCS PPC-6700 which is
very similar in concept to the (HTC) 8525.
However, the Sprint logo-ed 6700 is entirely able to access
the FREE Internet Web sites via it's Wireless feature, both
when it was NOT yet activated, and now activated with only a
voice-only Sprint plan.
(Yes, as Cingular does, Sprint will charge an additional
per-kilobytes usage charge for using it's 1-X and EVDO
systems when not activated with Vision media or Data plans.)

Should the 8525 still be able to access FREE Wi-Fi Internet
when only using an activated voice-only plan?

Yes. You just needto configure the Connections settings properly. In
the "advanced" tab of the Connections applet, select "Select Networks"
and change both options to "My Work Network" save it and reboot.

No, not at all- they've just pre-configured the phone for Cingular's data
service's proxy server.

Configuring for switching automatically is a little difficult because of
Cingular's proxy. (When Wi-Fi is avilable, th phone still tries to use
the proxy, which isn't available over Wi-Fi.)

On my T-Mo PDA phone (T-Mo also uses a proxy) I have the first nework
selection set to My Work Network and the second to T-Mobile Data. This
allows IE to use wi-fi first, or cellular data if unavailable, but the
messaging app only uses cellular data (which is ok with me- I have an
unlimited plan.)

I have a cingular 8125...similar to yours I think.

I also have a pay as you go data plan. I don't have either mediaworks
or the pda data plan. I think the cost is about .01 per KB or
something like that. I don't use it often...just to access weather
maps.

I have no problem accessing the internet via the phone or via wireless
internet. I hook up to my Linksys wireless access point at home all
the time.

the only problem I had originally was that the PDA wouldn't see any
access point that was encrypted with any security. I don't know if
this was the best way to fix it.....but I TEMPORARILY removed all
security protocols from my wireless access point. then the 8125 saw
it with no problem. After using the internet for a few minutes, I
reprogrammed my wireless access point, reinstituting all the necessary
security. My Cingular 8125 sees it fine now..........

I have had problems connecting at work....we use a form of VPN.
Frankly I don't care enough to figure it out. I haven't gone to any
public access points to log in....maybe I will try it tommorrow and
see if it works OK.

You need to tell it a DNS.

Thanks. That did it!
When I re-configured BOTH menus to "My Work Network" at:
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select
Networks, then the Wi-Fi would function OK with Internet
Explorer.

What misguided me was that the very similar Win. Mobile 5.0
in my (Sprint) PPC-6700 has it defaulted as "SPRINT"
selected in the 1st menu, and "My Work Network" selected in
the 2nd menu.

Apparently for some unknown (nice) reason the Win. Mobile
5.0 in the (Sprint version) PPC-6700 is able to
automatically recognize when a User accesses either the
Sprint data services or any Wi-Fi access points.

So -- should I decide to ever use the Cingular data services
with a 8525, apparently I must then manually go back to:
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select
Networks, and re-select "Cingular" for that 1st menu.

Juan,

When setting up the net WLAN connection, ensure that you have the
setting "My network card connects to:" and in the drop down ensure
that you have "The Internet". This is setting that I have had to
ensure that all WM phones from Cingular have to have. It is has been
my experience that WM devices, by default, want to assume that your
network card connects to work. Also, it is possible to leave that
setting and designate that your "Work Network" connects to the
Internet.

Some of your questions can be answers not in the "Cingular" news
groups, but, if you did a broader search on the topic of Windows
Mobile 5 settings. :)
