Question for a cell phone neophyte
|

| I'm not really a beginner, as I've had a cell phone for a few years, but I
really only use it for emergencies. I'm not a young kid, so it's not a big
deal to have a phone for just chatting, and I'm not in business where a cell
phone is essential these days. I have misplaced my phone and need to buy a
new one. Since I have to buy one and can get almost any of them free with a
two-year contract, I was thinking about buying a camera phone. Now the
question. When you take a picture, can you download it to your computer?
If you send it to someone else with a cell phone, does it cost extra--like
sending a text message is extra? Thanks for any info.

If you have a USB cable likely you can download, carriers and phones
differ.
and yes there is a charge for sending photos. Either a flat rate for
a given number or unlimited number, or a per picture charge, depending
on how your account is set up.
Most camera phones take rather poor pictures however.

Thank you. I suspected the extra cost. Maybe I'll buy a simpler phone.

Your best bet is buying last year's model of a Motorola or Sony on
eBay. Then for the ~$200 you save buy last years model of a Digital
Camera, that gives 6.0 megapixels, and get some Great pictures.

I design data systems that use cellular networks. A friend is a trust
officer of one of the nation's largest banks.
I was carrying a Razr and a PDA, he had a camera-less cell phone and a 8
megapixel camera that was the first to panoramic shots. Our ongoing debate
was the value of the different cameras. Then one day as I sat in the back
yard in the spring, a butterfly lit on the crease of my Dockers. I got the
picture. Nothing in the world would have convinced that butterfly to come
back had I gone inside or my zoom lens, etc. Our argument ended.
A city judge has ruled 640x480 pictures to be legal proof of evidence.
A picture is a captured moment in time, that often cannot be repeated. You
really don't know from moment to moment if you will ever see that person,
place or thing again. Take a picture with something like a Razr cell phone
and enjoy it.

Agreed. I view the camera phone as the modern day Polaroid- sure it
takes crappy pictures, but I've got some great shots of my kids when the
phone was the only camera around. When I look back at these 40 years
from now, I won't be dwelling on the low image quality.

I always have a superlightweight, supersmall 8 megapixel Sony W100
with me for those once in a lifetime moments. It provides infintely
better pictures from infinitely better optics than any cell phone.

My cell phone (Moto RAZR V3xx) actually takes decent pictures, but
I always have my Panasonic digicam with Leica superzoom lens in my car,
which pretty much blows away anything else south of about $1000.
The problem, of course, is that I can immediately email pictures from my
phone, but not normally from the Panasonic, but that problem is easily
solved by using a microSD card in an SD adapter in the Panasonic, which
can then be transferred to the V3xx for transmission. :)
