How hard is it going to be to get one with 1 week of release? I watched the
Quicktime video of its introduction at the Mac convention and Boy do I want
one BAD! I have heard rumors that at&t corporate stores and Apple stores
will only be allowed to distribute the iPhone. Is this true? Why NOT all
cingular (the new att) locations? I also heard that only 4 units per store
June 29. Does anyone have any information that has not been made public?

It would be prudent to have a limited availability at first, and it
may not even be available at Apple stores.

1. Artificially create a shortage and perhaps more demand,
certainly lots of free press.

2. Have a limited number in public hands till AT&T learns how to
support these phones, and makes it far easier to solve any problems
that might possibilly occur (hardware, software, firmware, support) if
you're dealing with a relatively small number of users.

3. Make it possible to introduce a more expensive (profittable) model
with one or more of the following?? Easier to charge more when there's
a shortage.

a) More memory - 16 Gig ??
b) GPS applications
c) 3G connectivity.
d) Infrared connectivity
e). Bundled with case, car charger, etc.

The biggest design flaw in the iPhone is the non-user-replaceable
battery. Maybe that sort of thing is okay for an iPod, but not for a
phone. Or maybe they have already fixed that and we just don't know
about it yet.

While I'd like to see all those features, I think the one you're not
going to get is IR. Too bad, I use IR a lot, but it seems to be mainly
used in Europe and Asia.

IR seems to be going away, HP for instance no longer has it in their
LaserJets.

Just curious- what do you use IR for these days?

I used to use IR a lot for tethering my PDAs and laptops to my phones for
data connectivity, and for syncing PDAs, but these days I use bluetooth
instead. I don't really miss the IR line-of-sight limitations! ;-)

Quickly moving contacts, ringtones, pictures from my wife's Sony W600i
to mine, and vice versa is most efficiently accomphlished with IR.

I know the public safety officer in my city, and he gave me a copy of
the emergency preparedness information provided by Apple and AT&T. It
looks like they expect demand to be extremely high, and are going to try
to prepare all affected communities for the launch.

I scanned the memo and put it up at "http://tinyurl.com/2m8oqx".

Since this launch will affect even non-AT&T subscribers, I took the
liberty of cross-posting this to other groups.

In short, I wouldn't count on getting an iPhone right away. However the
recent announcement of the 3G iPhone coming out soon may slightly temper
the demand.

Apple is known for suing over this kind of fraud.

And you decided that using 68 characters to complain that he used 32
characters was somehow better? BTW, he actually used 38 characters -
you were off by 6. ; D

Hardly. You're probably the only person that cares.

Bluetooth has supplanted (yuck) IrDA, thank goodness.

I personally think Bluetooth is both more efficient and more reliable
than IrDA.
