New phone/no contract extension?
|
|
| Karen C. 2007-06-09, 12:33 pm |
| Can you get a new phone without getting a contract extension? We
have three months left on our contract with Cingular, but I was
thinking I'd probably switch carriers at the end of the contract.
Daughter broke her phone yesterday. Is there any way we can get
a new phone to last through the end of the contract? I don't
want to spend the money on another Razr. I just want to get her
something to get by on until we can switch to a new carrier.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks!

You can. It'll cost ya though. Less than the contract termination
fee probably, but it's still damned expensive. I wouldn't recommend a
new phone replacement in your situation.

In our area there is the main cingular location where they do repairs
as well. I got a refurb Nokia there for $50. Or I bet there are
folks in the newsgroup with an extra GSM phone lying around willing to
sell ya one on the cheap. She still has her SIM right? Just slide
it into the new phone, and it'll work.

Yeah, I didn't want to have to go with anything expensive. My
sister said she thought I could get a "GoPhone" that's compatible
with Cingular service and have them switch it to our contract.
She's not known for checking out info before giving advice,
though, so . . .

Yes, she still has the SIM. Thanks for your feedback. I will
check with Cingular to see what they have to say, as well.
Thanks!

Log in to your account, select "upgrade a phone", and pick a phone.
Step two is to pick a plan, but there should be a blue button for "upgrade
equipment only" at the top of the "plans" area. That will show the cost
for the phone, and an $18 upgrade fee will be added during checkout.
Pricing might depend on your plan. Have you checked to see if you have a
discount plan through your employer? Some of the phones are offered for $0
on this page, with $18 added at checkout for no contract upgrade.
http://www.wireless.att.com/home/ under Business, "Corporate discount
eligibility" requires you to be able to receive company email.

We don't know what is meant by "she broke her phone", but if she was
being careless, you could use this situation to learn a lesson in "take
care of important stuff or do without". OTOH, others have offered
alternatives for spoiling her.

LOL! Actually, she treats her phone like it's gold. She's had
it for almost two years and only dropped it three times. She's
much more responsible with hers than I ever thought of being with
mine.
> OTOH, others have offered alternatives for spoiling her.
Ha! No spoiling going on here; she's paying for the replacement.

This is great news! Exactly what we needed to know. Thanks so
much!

Just go out and buy a gophone and take the sim chip from the broken
phone into the new phone and everything will be fine.

This sounds like an even more perfect solution, especially since
there would be no waiting for a new phone in the mail.
Thanks!

Some folks say the GoPhones are phones that have IMEI blocked from use on
a pre-paid plan. You might want to check that out before you buy one.

Two years ago when I went with Cingular I got my wife Cingular
Prepaid, then called KIC. I got myself a postpaid phone. I have
switched SIMs in the phones with no problems at all.
HOWEVER, since that was 2 years ago it would probably be worth your
while to check out Mr. Dold's comment. There is no telling what
Cingular might have changed in the last two years.

Got the GoPhone just a short while ago, and it works just fine
with her SIMS card. Thanks!

Just got home with the GoPhone, and it seems to work just fine.
We got it at Wal-Mart, and the salesman said that if it didn't
work for us, or if anything went wrong with it in 45 days, we
could just take it back for a refund, provided we had all the
original packaging and sales receipt. Nice fellow; even put the
SIMS card in to make sure it worked for us.
Thanks, again!

in north Texas on two phones.

Winner. The idea that certain IMEIs would be blocked seemed like too much
work for Cingular to bother with, but I just did a Google search for
gophone sim cingular imei blocked, and came up with the rumors and stories
that I remembered seeing. They mention Wal-Mart specifically, but also
indicate that activating the phone as a GoPhone first might eliminate the
problem.
Some of the articles also indicated that the phone might quit in a few
days.
So, was that less than $20, and you don't care what kind of phone it was,
or how many minutes came with it?
Did you look at the equipment only purchase on the Cingular site?

| So just pick up an old one used and swap the SIM card. You don't have to
tell Cingular anything to use that SIM in another phone, as long it's one
that'll function on the network.
