Still "Cingular" here in Northern California.

My KRZR K1 says AT&T on the main screen, but it says Cingular when it
is turning off.

On the 3G SIM in the V3xx? That surprises me.
When I put the old SIM into the V3xx, it said Cingular.
A newly activated 3G SIM also showed Cingular, but changed to AT&T within a
few minutes. That SIM in a Nokia 6126 shows AT&T.

"3G" SIM in a V3xx, the SIM I received when I purchased the phone
earlier this year.

Mine still shows "Cingular".
From watching a phone bootup and registration sequence in MPT, it looks
like the network is sending "AT&T (US)", but that's being overridden by
the firmware or the SIM.

It's difficult to determine exactly what is going on. My wife's V557
was purchased from Cingular and it has always said Cingular on both
the main screen and the shut-down screen. My KRZR K1 was purchased
after AT&T bought Cingular back. When I brought it home from the
store, it said Cingular on the main screen and Cingular on the
shut-down screen. Within a day, the main screen began showing AT&T,
but the shut-down screen still shows Cingular. I would have thought
that being as the KRZR apparently picked up AT&T from the tower and
switched the main screen to AT&T from Cingular, that my wife's V557
would also now show AT&T on the main screen. It doesn't.

Text on startup and shutdown screens, as well as menus, is stored in
handset memory, and thus isn't affected by the network. The carrier
alpha tag display on the main screen is another matter -- it can be set
by the network, SIM, and/or firmware.
