Apple: iPhone battery better than expected

Story Highlights• Apple: iPhone will support 8-hours of talk time
• Battery supports 7 hours of video playback, 6 hours of Web use
• Touch-screen made out of optical-quality glass, not plastic
• On sale at AT&T, Apple stores on June 29 for $499 and $599

CUPERTINO, California (AP) -- Apple Inc. says its highly anticipated iPhone
will have a battery life that supports 8 hours of talk time.

The company said Monday the battery also supports 7 hours of video
playback, 6 hours of Internet use, 24 hours of music playback, and it will
feature up to 10 days of standby time before requiring a recharge.

When the phone was unveiled in January, Apple said it would support 9 days
of standby time.

In another change, the iPhone's touch-sensitive screen will be made out of
optical-quality glass, instead of plastic. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the
change will create "superior scratch resistance and clarity."

The combo cell phone, media player and wireless Web device will only be
sold at stores owned by Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc., which has an exclusive
deal to offer service for the device when it goes on sale in the U.S. on
June 29.

It will also be available at Apple's Web site.

The iPhone will be available in two configurations, $499 for a 4 gigabyte
model and $599 for one with 8 gigabytes of storage.

So if Apple says 8 hours; expect about 4.

The GUI with the finger to screen manipulation shown on the iphone demos was
featured at the 2006 TED conference in Monterey. It was a guy's new idea.
I watched the conference documentary on streaming Netflix, last night. They
said he left the conference with several business offers. Obviously, Apple
was at TED!

If they did this in the iphone, just imagine what the next generation of
Apple's computers will be like.

I wonder if Apple paid for exclusive rights, or if other companies will be
able to offer this GUI?

Microsoft already is showing a PC running a similar type of interface
on a tabletop (about $10K a pop, IIRC), and I've heard that some
federal agencies are using BIG versions of the GUI, so I don't think
that Apple's gotten any real exclusivity leverage other than the
iPhone itself. It's neat to watch the iPhone be controlled, but I
wonder how usable it is with just one hand?

The 8 gig will mostly be used for music, downloaded from one's computer
to the iPhone over USB2, or for movies, similarly downloaded.

On the drafting table sized example at "TED" the demo showed using the left
hand to manipulate the desktop/background while the right hand would
manipulate a window. -Stuff like that.

-or, the left hand and arm could be shielding the face in anticipation of a
car crash...

Right. If you really believe that, then I've got some lovely property
in New Orleans to sell you. :)

As <http://www.channelregister.co.uk/20...rumours
/
>
puts it:

You may as well ask: "Why do people want to believe that the iPhone -
still not available! - has twice the battery life of other GSM phones
of the same size? and is an incumbent in its market?" Just google for
"iphone killer" to see how awful public perception is! Nearly a
million hits!

The answer: Jobs talks to journalists who worship him.

If you want to get interviews with Steve, you won't do it by writing
sceptical columns. And an interview with Jobs is gold for a
publication, so don't be too surprised to find one in New York
Magazine soon...

IPhone battery news juices Apple shares
Shares rise on claims of improved battery life;
analyst calls move 'overhyped'
....
Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research, sounded a note
of skepticism about Apple's latest battery times. In an interview
Monday, he said sources had indicated the iPhone's active-use battery
life could be closer to four or five hours of heavy use -- similar to
the battery life of a typical "smart phone."

Wu said that because an iPhone will also function as an iPod, unless
Apple's claims are accurate, four to five hours of video playback
might not be sufficient. "We will find out in a few weeks." Wu holds
a buy rating on Apple's stock.

Jobs was referring to the iPhone with the "extended battery pack":

http://tinyurl.com/ysebso

It'll run almost a day on this battery pack, even playing iTunes online.
