Yup, a really neat piece of equipment. Too bad it's next to useless because
you have to be on the Stinkular network to use it....

that's only the phone part until Skype is ported over, the rest runs on
802.11g, so it's up to you if want to use ATT or your own network.

You can't buy it without a two year contract, Stinkwad.

yeah, but if ATT doesn't shape up Apple will force them to, Apple had to
get Intel in line a year or so ago, now Intel is operating much better.
Apple is pretty demanding and they simply won't allow ATT customers,
(soon iPhone customers) to receive poor service. it just won't happen.

yes, but ATT is a very old school company with much to learn from Apple,
Apple is really only technically 10 years old and can shape up ATT quite
quickly with a few succinct recommendations. Just look at what steve is
doing to Disney for a current example.

ATT just replaced their boss, that was steve's move, you can be 100%

wow, you apple fans sure do see the world through a different set of eyes,
eh? :D whitacre is retiring from att only a year early, at 65, and there's
been nothing to suggest it was anything other han by choice. additionally,
his replacement, stephenson, has been the heir apparent for quite some time,
and is said to be very much like whitacre, so if jobs did force something
(somehow), he didn't exactly change much.

ah, his performance at MacWorld spelled the end of his career, he's not
a world class CEO, it was clearly apparent. The process to push him out
of ATT started the moment he "finally" got off the MacWorld stage.

Same thing happened to the SONY CEO, Nobuyuki Idei come to think of it.
MacWorld keynotes are like a guillotine if you don't measure up to
extremely high standards.

yes, but stephenson is younger and more articulate. you can't have
mind-numbing CEO's like whitacre near Apple products. Apple will not
tolerate it.

but he did change things, just like how he pushed Eisner out of Disney a

will Apple do the same to ATT? hard to say, but Apple now controls what
ATT does in terms of wireless, so they are up against a tough task

only delusional people 'know' it- eisner was on his way out for quite a
while before that- he had been forced down as chairman back in 2004 if you
recall, due to shareholder revolt, and a very public dispute with roy
disney. he was also widely dislike amongst disney brass. but you can go
ahead and believe it was all because jobs wanted him out...

How odd that they chose ATT for their iphone.

And Apple gets no say what so ever on who runs ATT, ever.

The most Apple ever gets to do is decide who they want to get
involved with for their iphone, and even you must have noticed
that they chose ATT with whitacre driving that particular bus.

Yet it is true that SJ is highly influential in the world
of digital content provision. Just think of the impact
his 2007-02-06 "Thoughts on Music" piece had in the music
industry (161,000 Google hits for "Steve Jobs" "Thoughts on
Music". He blamed the "big four" music companies for creating
interoperability issues by their insistence on using DRM, and
suggested that they should reconsider.

Just under two months later Apple announce the availability of
DRM-free music from EMI on the iTMS. Yes it could be coincidence.
EMI might have changed their mind anyway. But it seems that
this sort of thing has happened too many times for it to be
coincidence. Apple have a massive share both of the portable
player market and the digital audio download market. This is
bound to give them a huge huge influence in the industry
regardless of what the Mac zealots say or do.

Face the facts, Apple has control over ATT by one single product. ATT
will either rise or fall with the blessing of Apple from Friday, June
29th forward. ATT just isn't in command any longer, Apple calls all the

AT&T has the largest wireless network in the USA; they don't need the
iPhone, even though it will benefit their bottom line a lot. They and
Apple are locked in to a five-year contract with each other, so Apple
doesn't control AT&T.

Hmm, Apple is hovering right around 1% in terms of market share (for
business), while the wireless part of AT&T has about 30% market share
(for business), while for non-wireless products AT&T does business with
about 80% of larger businesses (be it long distance, conference calling,
leased lines, whatever).

Apple's strengths are in the education market and in the consumer
market. They could, if they wished, expand their market share in
businesses, but they would have to offer dual-boot systems direct from
Apple, rather than the current way of having their resellers offer this
option.

The iPhone is not directed at large businesses. It cannot run the
necessary applications.

I've been a Verizon Wireless customer for nine years (the first year or
two, it was still GTE Mobilenet where I lived at the time), and if
Verizon weren't so anal about letting me replace a damaged phone at a
reasonable price, I would have bought another phone from them. But they
want me to pay full price, which comes to almost what an iPhone costs.
Even so, the deal maker for me about the iPhone, since I need to buy an
new phone anyway, is that it can do 802.11g (and b), so I can check my
email and browse the web from any place that I can with a wireless
laptop. I've been thinking about buying a laptop just for that purpose,
so getting the iPhone fits both bills.

When I first saw the iPhone at MacWorld when Jobs introduced it, I felt
that I didn't need it--I wasn't planning to get a laptop then--and
although I admired it, I had no intention of buying one.

The only feature of the iPhone that no other devices match is the
ability to play DRM protected downloads from iTunes. On other devices
you'd have to remove the iTunes DRM which is beyond the ability of many
users.

For the user that wants what is essentially a web pad, world phone, and
iPod combined, and that doesn't care about doing lots of e-mail or
running PDA applications the iPhone is fine.

You can use "http://phonescoop.com" to search for phones with 802.11,
and there are a few with 802.11g.

One advantage of the iPhone is the large amount of integrated memory.
With the competing phones, you'd have to use a MicroSD card to equal the
memory, and you can't even buy an 8GB MicroSD card yet (due next year).

One of the reasons some people are down on the iPhone is that they are
comparing it to PDA type devices such as the Blackberry or Treo, which
are more of a PDA plus a phone, and which can run a huge number of
applications natively (not just web based apps). The iPhone is not a
PDA, it's more of an entertainment device plus a phone plus a web
browser. It's actually not a bad deal for a mini-web pad for use
802.11b/g, the phone function and music player functions notwithstanding.

watch the above link, it fully shows the various 15 or so included ring

Actually I'm right on target, but it takes awhile for many of my
comments to catch up with the "rest of them", so they get confused and
cry foul, but I just laugh.

No serious Mac user questions what I say, they simply say "hum"...
that's damn interesting. I'm the longest Mac using, Mac user here, by a
long shot, so my comments are based on full reality of the Apple/Mac
market and how Apple is vastly changing all markets it enters.

Ah, but they said the same thing about the Mouse, now EVERYONE uses the
Mouse. You clearly don't understand what Apple has just done.
Multi-Touch changes all the rules for touch screens. It's the ONLY one
that will work on cell phones for 17 years. Apple has far more

smartphones are obsolete starting at 6:01pm on friday.

the iPhone has:
Display resolution greater than QVGA
Bluetooth
WiFi

It came up with no phones
If I eliminated the greater-than-QVGA, it showed four phones, all of
which are made by HTC. Eliminating the camera requirement didn't change

Which one, specifically? Nokia appears to have about a dozen N-series
models.

Incidentally, this kind of complexity in the competition's product

Dont need to, only fools would buy a particular phone

> And the cell phone market works completely differently

Because almost everyone already has a cellphone and
its unlikely to be the only cellphone they have ever had.
Nothing like the situation when the ipod first showed up.

With cellphones that are exclusive to one network, the coverage
of that network is crucial to whether you even consider that
phone. Nothing like that when the ipod first showed up.

When you have a cellphone that is exclusive to just
one network and you have a 2 year contract to get it,
you might just consider what its going to cost you to
use that phone for those 2 years. Nothing like that when
the ipod first showed up because you could always
dump your CD collection into the ipod if you wanted to.

With cellphones, what matters is how well they work with
the services you plan to use on them, particularly other than
phone calls and SMSs. Nothing like that with media players.

Etc etc etc.
