There are two problems: first, according to Skype's webpage, voice
doesn't work on the 8525 (yet), only "chat", (Skype's version of IM) and
even if/when voice works, it only works well on 3G or Wi-Fi. EDGE (still
commonly used outside the largest metros) is too slow for reliable VoIP.

Well, I've got a Dopod 838 Pro (HTC TyTn) which is the same hardware as
the 8525 running on Cingular. Got Skype running fine on it, both voice
and chat...

Good to know- thanks! What version are you running? Maybe Skype hadn't
updated the "incompatible devices" list with recent releases.
The Tytn should be an ideal Skype device with it's 400MHz processor. It
runs pretty lousy on my Wizard (200MHz) unless I overclock it, but it's
come in handy in the occasional hotel room where I've had free Wi-Fi and
lousy GSM coverage!
