With the iPhone completely dominating cell phone news this week, it's easy
to forget that other cell phones exist. Crave wonders why any manufacturer
or service provider would see the PR benefit in making an announcement this
week, but that hasn't stopped T-Mobile from unveiling its Hotspot @Home and
Sprint from taking the wraps off its new LG Muziq phone.

But today Verizon Wireless revealed that it was hosting its own party to
match the Apple and AT&T events on the iPhone launch day. In a press
release, the carrier invites shoppers to test-drive "the leading wireless
company with the most reliable voice and data network". Meow.

The carrier also invites shoppers to check out its selection of music cell
phones, including the LG VX9400, which is on sale for $99.99. That's a good
deal for a cool phone, but the keep in mind that the spiffy V Cast Mobile
TV service (something the VX9400 supports) is available only in a few
cities. Yet unlike the iPhone, the LG handset does offer 3G.

Buyers will also be able to download songs wirelessly at the stores from
Verizon's V Cast Music service. As everyone knows, the iPhone will not
support tune downloads over the air. But the best news is that customers
will get a free Music Essentials kit, which normally sets you back $30.
That's exceedingly generous of Verizon, considering the kit is needed to
even sync a phone with a PC. We don't know why Verizon just doesn't give
you the kit in the first place, but that another story.

So if you've decided you're too cool for the iPhone, or you refuse to leave
Verizon for AT&T, you'll be pleased to know that Verizon has you covered.
Verizon stores and kiosks will stay open until 9 p.m. And you can be sure
these stores won't have a line.

Do you know that iPhone owners can use MSN on it?

In a vain attempt to stop the churn of 1 million users to the iPhone
before years end, Verizon is waiving activation fees
untill July 9 at Circuit City locations.

As one reviewer said about the iPhone "You can use it
right away, no manual needed" , although one is included.

I have used ATT and Verizon for at least twenty years, concurrently. Let me
assure you that ATT third rate. Verizon blows it away on a daily basis.
FYI: The "new" ATT is not anything like the "old" ATT.

The old ATT Wireless ran itself into the ground, finally selling
itself off to Cingular for less than half its IPO price of just over 2
years earlier.

Is the iPhone locked? If it isn't, why wouldn't any GSM - based phone/data
system's SIM card work? I have a Blackberry 7100 that I don't use any more
for various reasons, but mostly due to it's lousy reception. When I bought
it, it came with T-Mobile service. After six months I got them to give me the
code to unlock the phone so that I could use pay-as-you-go phone service in
Europe (T-Mobile's roam charges overseas were outrageous - over a dollar a
minute at that time as I recall while TIM (Telecom Italia Mobilare) charged
less than US$0.30/min domestically). In an effort to get better coverage, I
switched from T-Mobile to Cingular after my service contract period was up.
All I had to do was remove the T-Moble SIM card and replace it with a
Cingular card and Voila! I had a Cingular Blackberry. It was then that I
found that it wasn't the service that had lousy coverage, it was the phone
itself, so I went down to the Cingular store and found a tiny blister-packed
'Go-Phone' (Motorola V190) for $30. I popped my SIM card out of the
Blackberry and into the Moto, and I've never looked back. The Blackberry now
resides in a bureau drawer, and Moto gives me 4-bars here at home where the
Blackberry barely gave one.

My point is that if GSM phones are unlocked, it looks as if you can use
anybody's service (as long as they are GSM).

So what your saying is the blood sucking verizon will continue to
screw over there customers by forcing them to pay full price for half
a phone. And if they do not feel it's crippled enough they will give
you a free software upgrade to lock up anything they forgot about the
first time...

I'm sure it is, but Cingular will unlock it after several months. T-Mobile has
a similar policy. But both initially sell their phones SIM-locked.

Try to connect your crippled Verizon POS to your computer via Bluetooth
or a cable to transfer wallpaper and ringtones. OOPS! You can't do it
because they've disabled that functionality that the manufacturer built
in.

You must have a hacked phone. It's no secret that Verizon cripples
their phones so that you have to pay them for transferring ringtones,
wallpaper, etc.

verizon does cripple the bluetooth on their phones, but you can
transfer wallpaper and ringtones w/out hacking the phone- you just use
a serial cable profile. there's no problem transferring via a cable
to begin with- they just don't provide you the software to do it.
bitpim is the most popular choice for transferring files.

and since this conversation is in the context of the iphone, it should
be pointed out that the iphone has the same limitations on using user
ringtones, and the first reports are that the iphone's bluetooth is
also crippled... and more so than most verizon phones- for example,
verizon bluetooth phones have been coming w/ their dial up networking
profiles enabled, which is not true w/ iphone...

Some Razr phones made it out of Verizon with everything working. I had one.
Once Verizon found out they called me to bring it in for a firmware update.
I said yeah right. Why so you can take away the Bluetooth function ?

When I sold it on eBay the bids got up high fast. :)

While i expected the feature set to be somewhat limited at first
introduction, i must say i'm somewhat shocked to learn that apple has
not yet enabled and/or has intentionally crippled bluetooth features
but then again... apple wants to tie everything iphone related to the
itunes music store, hence you have to open an itunes account to even
activate the phone. Look for them to offer ringtones via itunes soon
though it may be possible to assign itunes purchased music as a ringtone?

True. However, you'll have a hard time might hearing that bluetooth-
transfered ringtone in a "no-service" area...

Apparently it's also no secret that the iPhone is almost equally
crippled. According to engadget.com, who's playing with 12 of them, you
can't tether a computer to an iPhone via bluetooth or cable, can't
transfer files via bluetooth, and can't even use it as an iPod until it's
activated with AT&T (so much for unlocking it! It only allows emergency
phones calls and no other functions if a non-iTunes activated SIM is
inserted.)

I'm surprised Verizon passed on the iPhone- it's crippled almost to
Verizon spec and beyond!

Check out BitPim. It's a free download from sourceforge. If your phone
is supported, then get a cable on ebay or somewhere. Make sure you get
the right cable, as some of the phones are very similar. Proceed to
transfer ringtones, phonebooks, wallpaper, etc to your phone.

Problem solved.

bitpim works over bluetooth too- it uses the serial protocol that's usually
still available, even if file transfer is disabled. from the articles about
how iphone *totally* disables bluetooth other than for earpieces, it may not
be able to take advantage of bitpim...

such crippled phones even exist.

More or less about the same as far as coverge, each has their better areas,
I read people XXXXX about ATT's coverage, honestly never had a problem,
When I had VZW the same held true.

Why I changed is I prefer gsm for when I visit overseas, Vzw screwed me or
try to on some phones, I hate they extend your contract everytime you change
your plan. But otherwise, the do what they do very good, make calls.

OK as far as more places, your phone won't work in europe, after all you did
say more places.

And can I have your documented areas where the have "no-service" areas, and
not your rhetoric. Since you don't use ATT, how would you know? Funny, my
"no-service" phone seemed to work everywhere I've been in the US, and btw,
it worked in areas like europe where VZW and Sprint phones would be needed
to go to some secure land fill because they are nothing more then
paperweights. So where is more areas? One or two here and there, and that
works both ways. I had excellent coverage with them, except in my home.

Sure you can have my documented areas, and I'll toss in the rhetoric for
free!

For starters, my southwestern Denver suburban neighborhood- a subdivision
of about 2000 homes, where as of two years ago when Verizon finally put
up a tower AT&T/Cingular became the ONLY carrier that DOESN'T work here.
Even Nextel works! (For years, only Sprint and T-Mo worked here!
Ironically the two services most maligned for crappy coverage.)

> Since you don't use ATT, how would you know?

I used Cingular since before there was a "Cingular" (SBMS in KC.) I was
a monthly Cingular customer for ten years, a Cingular dealer for seven of
them, and used them until I moved to Denver. I continued using them for
three more on prepaid (via three resellers, Callplus, Justalk, and Beyond
Wireless) as a TDMA/analog backup for my T-Mo GSM phone. I even have a
few GoPhones I've bought on clearance sales that Iwhip out when I need in
a pinch (i.e. selling a car and not wanting to use my home number.)

> Funny, my "no-service" phone seemed to work everywhere I've been in
> the US,

Good for you. I've had trouble with Cingular in a few National Parks
throughout the west and the Colorado ski resorts where I've had to put my
prepaid phone into manual selection mode and roam on Verizon. A network
search of my quad-band T-Mo phone comes up empty.

I get piss-poor service on Cingular in many parts of East Providence, RI,
(where I grew up and am currently visiting family) a city of 50,000. My
brother uses Verizon here as his primary business phone because, in his
words, "everyone else has shi--y coverage outside of Providence..."

I was in Washington DC earlier this month, ONLY Verizon works in the
Metro (subway.)

> and btw, it worked in areas like europe where VZW and Sprint
> phones would be needed to go to some secure land fill because they are
> nothing more then paperweights. So where is more areas?

Hey, I'm as much of a GSM snob as anyone- I'm a happy T-Mobile customer.
I LIKE Cingular as well- good phones, reasonable prices, fast data, etc.

But, UNLIKE you, apparently, just because I like or use a service, I
don't delude myself into thinking it's obviously the "best" in all
facets. For example, T-Mo has excellent voice quality, and is an
excellent value, but has slow data and relatively weak rural covrage.
Cingular has fast data, is relatively cheap, but lacks nationwide
coverage compared to Verizon, like T-Mo. I'd still take Cingular over
Verizon because of other GSM benefits (the ability to change phones on a
whim, international roaming, ability to use handsets sourced outside the
carrier, etc.) but I stick with T-Mo over AT&T due to the LARGE coverage
hole around my home.

> One or two here and there, and that works both ways.

In my experience it's more one-way! There are certainly areas where
Cingular works and Verizon doesn't, but in my travels those are far fewer
than the other way around.

> I had excellent coverage with them, except in my home.

Hmmm, so did I!

In my experience with many years of cellular usage, Verizon hands down
wins on coverage- but so what? If coverage isn't your #1 priority, (it's
not mine- cheap ubiquitous data and voice quality rank higher for me)
other services are preferable.

This is the point where the Verizonites all hop in and say "of course
coverage is the number one priority- it's a phone, blah, blah..."

Of course if they REALLY believed that, they'd drop Verizon for Iridium
or any other satellite phone because they truly work everywhere,
including the places even Verizon doesn't!

That just proves even the Verizon coverage snobs have a price/coverage
ratio tolerance - it's just different than mine!

well, reading pogue's review you definately can *not* even sync contacts,

I know for a fact that there is zero GSM coverage in the following
locations (where I have usable CDMA coverage from either Alltel or Verizon)

31d 30' 22" N / 95d 14' 21" W (location where my car jumped a couple
teeth on the timing belt, leaving me stranded. Verizon got decent voice
service standing on the rear bumper of my car, and enough service to
browse the internet via 1xRTT (at 2-5KB/sec) from the windshield, the
unlocked GSM and AT&Tular AMPS/TDMA phones I carried at the time showed
nothing)

31d 28' 25" N / 95d 24' 45" W (rural backroad that I travel frequently,
heavily populated for rural)

31d 26' 00" N / 95d 28' 34" W (Yep, the middle of US 287, the longest US
highway, and a part busy enough to be 4 lanes wide - Verizon never
really had a problem here, but they just erected a 250' tower about a
mile away)

You'll also find these locations to be on Cingular's high resolution
coverage maps as weak or no service locations.

And, last but not least - inside of my own damned house. My house
doesn't have a POTS line (VoIP with cellular fallback) so the phone
actually being able to work inside of my wood-frame home is important.

From anywhere in my home I can catch service from Verizon (-65 to -85
dBm) and Alltel (both using 800B, I'm on the edge of their licenses)

Also, when tower climbing I've noticed that GSM (especially 850) tends
to flop at some point not-that-far above the trees. I've had no problem
making calls from 200' up (as far as I climb) with Verizon. the GSM
issue may be related to the fact we're near a 3-way-point between 800A
carriers, and there may be just too damned much noise.

Because synching is nothing like browsing using wifi.

Every wifi capable laptop can move files over the wifi and I bet the iphone can too.

Apple may want to tie the sync feature to .Mac as they do with their
computers?
Anyway, i read there would be plenty of updates for the iphone in the
next few months prior to the release of leopard so a number of features
common to todays devices but for whatever reason were omitted from the
iphone will most likely be addressed between now and then.

Pft. CDMA has a clear cut 10+ dB advantage on any GSM system and
doesn't fall flat on its XXX when theres some multipath. Thats tough to

The U.S. providers know that Americans don't get the whole "unlocked",
"locked", "sim card" thing.

99% of them think that when you buy a phone, you have to automatically
get some sort of plan with the phone.

It's not like Europe, where you buy any phone you want, and then go
the local tabac or news stand and buy or recharge your sim card.

That's why you buy a prepaid phone in those places. It's cheaper in the
long run that paying international roaming. Plus you have a phone with a
local charger.

I know. It's a concept.

You take out the sim card of your US GSM phone and buy a sim card in
whatever country you need it for. You can just stick on a power
adapter to your charger's US plug. That way you still have all of
your contacts and other info that's been saved to your phone.

Your wonderful GSM phone rocks, except in areas where it doesn't work.
Often Verizon works just fine in those areas.

That's irrelevant to those who usually stay within the U.S. Many of them
may not be in their right minds, but their signing onto Verizon doesn't
tell you much about them one way or the other. Your post, OTOH, shows
you to be an idiot.

Canada? I take my Verizon phone to Canada (and Mexico) very frequently.
It works just fine. The CDMA coverage in Canada is generally better than
the GSM coverage. Also, my plan with Verizon includes service in Canada
and Mexico at no additional cost so I don't need to bother with the cost
and inconvenience of having to buy and maintain a local prepaid SIM.
