Author Best reception phone available...
Steven

I don't care about cost, features, functions, style, nothing. I'm looking
for a phone with the BEST reception. Nothing else matters. I don't care of
it's non-color display. I'm not looking for a phone that CAN'T be
activated...since I know some of you may say the old bag phones have the
best reception, but of course a current model or one that can be added to
the network. I currently have a Nokia 3985i and I love it. It's just past
it's time and really has taken a beating fairly well. It's been dropped many
times, under water several times, throw at me several times, ran over by my
ATV once, frozen a few times, and of course has sat in my car where it's
reached temps over 120 degreesF. Now, for a phone to take that kind of
beating and still work just fine I'd never want to get rid of it. Well. it
does have it's small problems that drive me nuts. The keys are very hard to
press. The cover comes off when it's not suppose to, just pain in the XXX
crap that is forcing me to look for another phone. Since I could care less
about features/functions of a phone, I feel the most important part of a
cellular phone is the reception, because without it, it's no longer a phone.
So, any ideas out there please?? I'll take anyone's suggestion....and
willing to really give it a shot. THANK YOU.

I have the same phone and same question, for that matter. (Although
I've never managed to run over mine with my ATV, the phone has saved
my butt a few times way out in the middle of no-man's-ATV-land!.)

This might be stating the obvious, but have you looked into an
aftermarket faceplate/keypad? They're dirt cheap and might solve your
problems right quick. Any major mall should have a store with them, or
there's eBay, though some of the aftermarket parts on there are junk
(I bought a new faceplate there and promptly broke it, then went back
to the stock Nokia one that's lasted so long).

I'm up for my new-every-two and having a really hard time to finding a
replacement that has the reception and durability of this phone. I
keep seeing the ad for that Nextel rubberized phone, but I don't get
the impression that's an area Verizon is headed. For that matter, it's
hard enough to find a tri-mode phone period!

I have a 3585i which is a non color version of the 3595i and used it on
Verizon. incredible digital eceptin...analog was subpar. My new phone
is a Nokia 6256i and it performs just about the same as the 3585i in a
bunch of field test, howeve the antenna needs to be up for the best
reception, while the 3585i seems to get better reception with the
antenna down. I don't even believe thae extendable antenna is connected
elctrically after doing some continuity tests and taking it apart. In
the old days VZW had this thing about all phones needing an extedible
antenna. Guess what..they were right. I've never seen a stub antenna
phone work well in fringe areas, except for the amazing patch antenna
used on the 3585/3595i phones.
You didn't say if analog was important? Getting an all digital phone is
missing an entire network, with huge coverage areas in rural places,
especially out west. A must for campers and off the beaen path
wanderings.

A phone that has an external antenna jack can get a huge reception
boost if paired with a directional Yagi antenna. I use this set up
camping. Allthough it is somewhat complicated it makes reception closer
to a 3 watt bag phone. More like 1.75 watts IIRC. Then there are
boosters that can increase the output to a certain degree in rural or
fringe areas. Depends on how much the tower decides to turn down the
phones output. The Tower always controls the overall output, no matter
how much one tries to boost the signal.

I tried an external antenna adapter for the Nokia 6256i and i'm sad to
say it doesn't work. Clever device with a spring loaded pin to touch
the contact in the back port...but it reduces the signal level by about
10 db. Obviously that tiny port is not meant to be an external antenna
contact, but they made a neat little adapter anyway:(

The Motorola v710 has got rave revues and word is IIRC, Circuit City
has some more to release. The 815 is an all digital version of that
phone which has got high marks for reception.

Two phones with very good reputations for rception are the Motorola
815 and the V276.

Nokia 6256i is probably the best right now

I think I may visit the 6256i. Although it's a clam...that would be ok. I
don't mind. Would be my first ever clam Nokia...and I do love Nokia.

Several people even at work told me to try the 6256i phone. I might as well,
give it a shot! Nokia doesn't make many clam shell phones and I could really
use the Bluetooth function with it as well. I may just go for it.

I've read the specs and it seems like a very nice phone. I know past
Nokias have had good reputations. It doesn't seem to be available from
Verizon. Is it only for independant dealers? If so what is the full
retail price?

What do you think of the new Nokia, Samsung and Razr with internal
antennas for Verizon? These brands had good reputations for reception
for phones with external extendable antennas but I'm skeptical of
internal antennas on Verizon.

BTW, you still use the Motorola 270c Timeport don't you? My wife has
one. IMO It's the best phone Verizon ever made. Works almost
everywhere.

I used that for a while. Awesome phone, and not sold in the west for
very long. The V60s is very similar, with a good speaker phone. It was
very hard to get, and is now discontinued of course.

The V325 looks promising. The V276 feels kind of chintzy compared to the
270C and the V60s.
